Summary

A naked woman in red high-heeled shoes is perched on the edge of Clifton Suspension Bridge with her back pressed to the safety fence, weeping into a mobile phone. Clinical psychologist Joseph O'Loughlin is only feet away, desperately trying to talk her down. She whispers, 'you don't understand,' and jumps.

Later, Joe has a visitor - the woman's teenage daughter, a runaway from boarding school. She refuses to believe that her mother would have jumped off the bridge - not only would she not commit suicide, she is terrified of heights.

Joe wants to believe her, but what would drive a woman to such a desperate act? Whose voice? What evil?

Flying start and a thought provoking premise.

The story flew from the start. The plot was clean but no less gripping for that. The premise certainly left you thinking. The main characters had some depth and left you pleasantly frustrated for "not looking behind them". I was thoroughly entertained and look forward to reading another in the series.

The reading was good, clear and unaffected. It gave depth to the characters and complemented the plot nicely.

Edge-of-your-seat stuff

I've not read any of this author's books before, and as a lover of crime fiction, I'm surprised I've waited so long to discover him!

From the opening pages I was hooked and drawn into the narrative. It's a well-written work, painting characters and situations I found it easy to bring to life in my mind. I felt there was a good mix between the sheer horror of the crimes being carried out and the mind games being played; and the day-to-day difficulties of marriage, relationships and perception.

A compelling read ... I'm looking forward now to reading (or listening to!) more from this author.

Took a while to get used to but now i love it

This was my first Robotham book and I had high expectations. Unfortunately I found Sean Barrets voice utterly uninteresting. His voice is cool and dispassionate, perfect for Robothams dark stories. I just couldn't get used to it. Left the book and returned to it a few times and suddenly I realised how perfect Seans voice is and now I am a Robotham and Sean Barret fan. This book is amazing, highly recommended.

Excellent Book, excellent narration

I really enjoyed this book, gripping from the start and so well written. This was my first book by this author but on the back of this I have downloaded others by the same author of which I waiting to listen to.
The narrator was great, which helped to towards the overall enjoyment of this book.
Would definitely recommend.

Brilliant

What did you like most about Shatter?

Great story. Totally addicted!

What was one of the most memorable moments of Shatter?

Great story.. all to be honest. To define one moment would be unfair to the rest of the book. Bought all in the series.

What does Sean Barrett bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

Riveting … Bought a lot of books… and most disappointed this didn’t!!!

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes

Any additional comments?

Brilliant... top! Write more Micheal! - Joseph O'Loughlin books. Please.

Tense but not always easy to listen to

What did you like most about Shatter?

The central characters are all interesting and there is great tension in the story but some details of the abuse of children are really harrowing

What other book might you compare Shatter to, and why?

The story is not like any other I've read or listened to

Which scene did you most enjoy?

There is a scene when the central character, Joe O'Loughlin confronts his wife's boss whom he suspects of having an affair with her. It is hilarious and cringe making at the same time

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Joe's frenetic search for his daughter when she disappears

Any additional comments?

The very graphic descriptions of the abuse the perpetrator threatens on the chidren is hard to listen to but I certainly would be interesed to listen to other books by Michael Robotham

Well told tale

I am getting hooked on the Joe O'Loughlin stories.. It was a little bit predictable in places and the 'still pretty' even in her 50's was a bit jarring but overall I enjoyed it and will read the next one. It's probably best to read them in order although they do stand alone.
