Summary

When Meredith Mitchell agreed to stay with her actress cousin, Eve, in the run up to Eve's daughter's wedding, she anticipated a degree of drama. But she can hardly have expected it to include murder, blackmail, and unrequited love. Or to involve a certain Chief Inspector Markby, a middle-aged divorcee.

As material witness to the only case of murder the Cotswold village of Westerfield has ever seen, Meredith soon becomes involved in the case and with helping Chief Inspector Markby. Meredith is a career diplomat and soon needs her considerable skills when steering a path between her duty to the police and loyalty to her cousin's family.

Just not very nice

I found this actually pretty horrid, it has some nasty bits with dead animals in it that I wished I'd known about before I brought it.

well-plotted and well-read

This book is the one in which Markby and his future wife Meredith first meet. It is a good story that keeps one wanting to listen. There are quite a few characters to remember, but they are brought alive by the writer and the excellent reading by Judith Boyd.

Instantly forgettable

I only finished this last week and I had to return to the book details to remind myself what it was about. Not a good sign.

I suppose if you're after a read that doesn't challenge you AT ALL then this is fit for purpose. Nevertheless, this doesn't make it any better than a 25p charity shop offering, though.

The narrator does an creditable job with relatively sub-standard material.

Fun listen.

This was fun to listen to. It is well produced. The plot allows plenty of opportunity for guessing who dunnit, should you wish.

Interesting cosy-ish crime thriller

I first read this book back in the 1990s and really enjoyed it. About 25 years later I have listened on Audible and I have to admit I found it a little dated, and it took me a while to get into it. However once I did get into it I was hooked and didn't want to stop listening.

Not sure whether I will listen to more in the series, but it was nice to revisit this as an audiobook.

Irritating

I love cosy crime novels, but it was hard going to finish this one. The figures are flat and irritating, the plot endlessly drawn out.

Excellent mystery novel

I really enjoyed the story and was rooting for the characters. A great start to a series of stories.
