Editor reviews

An enthralling and at times hilarious crime thriller audiobook, book 1 of the unabridged Rivers of London: PC Peter Grant written by Ben Aaronovitch is brilliantly narrated by Kobna Holdbrook-Smith. Listeners are taken into the depths of London’s hidden world of vampires, spirits, gods and goddesses of the mighty Thames. Join the impossibly funny PC Peter Grant as he leaves his policing life behind to become an apprentice to the last wizard of England, and listen intently as they embark on a battle against London’s sinister vampire underworld. Available from Audible now.

Summary

My name is Peter Grant, and until January, I was just probationary constable in that mighty army for justice known to all right-thinking people as the Metropolitan Police Service (and as the Filth to everybody else). My only concerns in life were how to avoid a transfer to the Case Progression Unit - we do paperwork so real coppers don't have to - and finding a way to climb into the panties of the outrageously perky WPC Leslie May. Then one night, in pursuance of a murder inquiry, I tried to take a witness statement from someone who was dead but disturbingly voluble, and that brought me to the attention of Inspector Nightingale, the last wizard in England.

Now I'm a Detective Constable and a trainee wizard, the first apprentice in 50 years, and my world has become somewhat more complicated: nests of vampires in Purley, negotiating a truce between the warring god and goddess of the Thames, and digging up graves in Covent Garden...and there's something festering at the heart of the city I love, a malicious, vengeful spirit that takes ordinary Londoners and twists them into grotesque mannequins to act out its drama of violence and despair.

The spirit of riot and rebellion has awakened in the city, and it's falling to me to bring order out of chaos - or die trying.

Read by Kobna Holdbrook-Smith.

A quirky take on an established theme

Would you listen to Rivers of London again? Why?

I would listen to this book again. The humour would make re listening a pleasure

What other book might you compare Rivers of London to, and why?

Nothing else. This is truly an original piece of writing.

Which scene did you most enjoy?

I enjoyed the beginning. I did not know what I was letting myself in for - had not read the blurb or reviews thoroughly - so was quite shocked when the whole magical idea was introduced.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The ending. To expand upon this would need a significant spoiler alert though!

Any additional comments?

This book started in a strange way and then just got stranger. I like strange. It’s sort of Inspector Morse meets Harry Potter. Then there’s the travelogue bit in there – lots of interesting information about London; and the self deprecating humour of our protagonist, Peter Grant. So we’ve got standard detective novel – with magic, a bit of the Rough Guide to London thrown in with a touch of the ‘Roddy Doyles’ to lighten the mood.

Peter Grant is young policeman fresh out of Hendon Police College who finds himself recruited to a small branch of the Met’ that deals with investigating the supernatural. Grant is an engaging character and his relationship with fellow newly qualified police officer, Lesley May, develops and sustains our interest throughout the book.

Together they become involved in investigating and solving interwoven crimes that take place in the capital. The addition of magic and the supernatural adds a layer of freshness and quirky innovation to this established format.

It is a terrific read / listen. I would recommend to anyone looking for something just a little bit different.

A really great listen

I really enjoyed this book. It started with a good intro to the main characters, the plot developed well and I thought the narrator added a real gravitas to the whole thing. Really pleased I chose this as our book clubs dive into audio listening :o) Personally I'll be getting the next one straight away!

Brilliant, gripping and fun

Where does Rivers of London rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This book and the series of books that follow are the best I have read since discovering Terry Pratchett.

Who was your favorite character and why?

It is a toss up between nightingale and molly, for her facial expressions alone.

Which character – as performed by Kobna Holdbrook-Smith – was your favourite?

The many different accents he does of the river Thames .

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The part with the mother and baby. I can't say more, but Lesley reaction to it, and how it is described hits the right spot.

Any additional comments?

This book is funny and dramatic , it is one that I shall listen to over and over again. I cannot wait for the next instalment . It is the only police book I have ever enjoyed

Great story!

I was surprised by this book, I got it on a whim and loved it. It's a simple story, in a very good way, lots of fantasy writers try and be complex and add unnecessary elements to their books which take away from the storytelling! This book is a good story well written , I highly recommend it.

*shrugs*

This is a bit controversial but honestly this just didn't entertain me. It wasn't that there was anything in it specifically bad, it's just neither the plot nor the characters really grabbed me. This even though I live and work in London. I mostly made myself listen all the way to the end because the book is SO loved by SO many. I just kept thinking I would hit the good, well the apparently great bit. Unfortunaly I just didn't. The hype just makes my disappointment greater.

Maybe I just don't like urban fantasy.

The narrator however was really really great. Well done him.

Its refreshing to read something that is in this world and not depressing... even if it is a little far fetched. its references to other books made me laugh. wish i read stuff like this more often. can't wait to listen to the next one.

The Start of a Great Series of books

Any additional comments?

I read this book and the sequels nearly a year ago, and when I think of all the books I have listened to (2 a month) these are the ones that come straight to mind and the ones I would recommend to friends.

When I first considered buying the book another reviewer said that this could be a TV series and have to agree.

Now looking forward to number 4 :)
