Publisher's Summary

Peter Leech is a cunning, devious killer, brutalized by half a lifetime in prison for the vicious murder of his parents. Now he's up for parole and, one way or another, he wants out.

He's driven by obsessive lust for Judy Finch, a beautiful parole officer who spurned his advances, and his thirst for revenge on those he blames for his conviction.

His nemesis, Doc Powers, the forensic psychiatrist who assessed his mental health for trial, is now on the panel reviewing Leech's parole application. But Doc fears for his own sanity. His feelings of guilt over his wife's death and his terrible experiences as a criminal profiler threaten to overwhelm him. Hallucinations haunt Doc as he struggles to convince his colleagues that Leech is a dangerous unreformed psychopath.

A blossoming relationship with Judy helps Doc heal - emotionally and professionally - but he soon discovers he's ill-prepared for Leech's re-entry into his life....

    "A Violent but Flawed Thriller"

Remorseless is an extremely violent thriller in the traditional British vein. It centers around an extremely hard case in the form of Peter Leech who is serving a life sentence for the murder of his parents. There is actually plenty to get stuck into here and the tension and violence escalate to an impressive climax. Will Patching, bravely narrating his own story is actually damn good at bringing Leech to life and leading the listener into his twisted and frightening mind.

In parts the writing is good but there are significant flaws in this production. Patching’s rendition of female characters and in fact most of the other characters reduces them to wheezy, squeaky parodies of what they should be. A lot of the dialogue just didn’t work for me in particular between the middle-aged Doc powers and Judy a high-flyer in the civil service. It came across as very weak and whiny for what should have been two very strong characters.

Summing this up there are some positive elements, I liked the basic thrust of the story but the dialogue in particular was unconvincing. Although I know that costs must be an issue I would certainly recommend that Patching consider a professional narrator, possibly someone like Michael Page for any future publications. Overall I can’t strongly recommend this one. Possibly though if you are after a violent thriller that will make you genuinely wince at times it could be an option. You will though have to lend it a generous ear . . .

"A Thrilling Listen From Start to Finish"
Where does Remorseless rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

At the top of the Tree look forward to listening again for sure.

What did you like best about this story?

It had mi right from the start, great narrative and descriptive scenes gave me know problems in visualising the brutality of the tale. Twists and turns it had mi on the edge right to the end. I looked forward to picking up the plot whenever the opportunity presented itself

What does Will Patching bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

    Super cool narrative vocal performance

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Had mi on the edge of mi seat

    Any additional comments?

If you want to be entertained… if you like a cracking Thriller… if you think you are good at working out endings… then this is the one for you…..and not a spoiler in sight in my review… you will just have to keep listening…I give this a whole heartedly 5 stars.

    "Dark but devilishly delightful...loved it!"
What did you like most about Remorseless?

If your idea of a good book is an Enid Blyton novel then this book is NOT for you. If you are looking for something dark and gritty with an underlying thread of twisted humour then this is the PERFECT book for you!

I found the characters (Peter in particular) to be fascinating. Over the course of the story you got to learn more about them, their motives and feelings about life. This helped me connect with them (even if I would not exactly want to be friends with all of them, shall we say!) ;)

I loved the darkness of the book - never depressing, just gritty and audacious.

What does Will Patching bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

I am sure the written version is interesting too but for me actually hearing some of the scenes described out loud helped it all come to life. Even the foul language spoken out loud with vigour and venom helped to bring across the power in the story.

The narration is top quality. Interesting but not irritating, the voices sounding realistic.

I could not stop listening - surely the best compliment?

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I wanted to yes, but it was too long for one sitting, which is a good thing. Too many short books out there right now. This book kept me company over a few days of long drives.

    Any additional comments?

If you want a gripping and interesting story that you cannot stop listening to then this is the book for you. I will say this is not a book for children or for the light hearted. But if you appreciate well written and well narrated dark literature, this is one for you. I highly recommend and look forward to seeing what Will Patch will produce next.

"A deep, dark look inside the minds of killers..."

A deep, dark look inside the minds of killers and psychologists alike

Remorseless is a deep and dark look into the mind of a convicted killer. This specific killer was convicted of killing his parents in a brutal murder when he was just a teenager. He maintains his innocence and claims this his brother did it and framed him. He's served 18 years of his life sentence but is up for parole. The book follows his parole hearing from his side and the side of the parole board. Especially Doc Powers, a clinical psychologist who's wife has just died in a tragic car accident that he believes is his fault.

Narration for the book was done by the author himself. While this is the first book where I have listened to the author narrate his own book I have two major takeaways. One, as an author, who better knows the voices you were thinking of when writing the book. This part makes this audiobook a super unique and interesting look inside Will's thought process while writing and performing each character. Two, IF you're going to do your own narrating work, make sure that you study up on recording, editing, and producing audiobooks, or hire out the editing and production. There were a lot of production issues in this book, change in both volume and quality of the voice were noticeable throughout. While for some people this won't bother them at all, others this will become a huge issue. I write my reviews as honest and open as I can -- and I really did like his narration, it was very good (and understandable, even as an American, I had no issue understanding Will's accent). My only other direct comment to Will would be, even if your character has their mouth shut or is missing teeth -- try and do the narration so that we can understand it. There was about 10-ish minutes or so where I could not understand half the words the he was performing. I understand this was more of a dramatization than a narration, but when your listener can't understand what's being said it doesn't do anyone any good.

Now, that is easily the longest I've ever written about the narration, but I promise the narration adds to the story, not takes away.

Remorseless was a kick in the stomach when you're already down. It's deep and dark and will make you question the legal system. With all of the media frenzy around the new Netflix show about a wrongly convicted murderer, this book will have you wonder what has to go wrong for someone to get locked up.

The look inside the minds of all the characters involved was absolutely fascinating. While I don't normally read books like this, I may have to start. I've always been fascinated (like the author) with the inner workings of the brain, especially those of "cold blooded" killers and so-called "psychopaths." Patching does a WONDERFUL job with the psychology and inner workings of every character involved.

Literally every aspect of this book felt important. Usually with a book this long, there always feels like some pieces were there to add something but you can't figure out what. With Remorseless, every word, page, and chapter needed to be there. Patching is a force to be reckoned with in the British Crime Thriller genre.

Without giving too much away, the second half of the book is brutal and harsh and absolutely a blast to read/listen to. Patching knows pacing well, and paces the action scenes so that they feel realistic and will have you thinking about them long after you've closed the page or turned off your audiobook. I found myself thinking about the thing within this book late into the night (thanks for that!) This book was both a page turner and a thought provoker. Usually page turners are full entertainment without much thought. And vice-versa, thought provokers are usually dry and without gusto. This book definitely has both.

Overall, I loved this book. The psychology felt super real, the struggles each character was going through were incredibly accurate and made you as a reader feel for them. Remorseless is definitely a book you should pick up and read. Just be warned, this will have you up late (either reading it, or thinking about it).

It may be because of my age - I turn 70 this Sunday - or that I am an American prude who does not get British/Euro realism - but I have not idea why the author had to include so much what I would consider to be pornography in an interesting story.

    "Narration needs work"

Although I liked this book for the story which kept me listening to it to the end, the narration I found to be off putting. When Will was doing the voices of the characters it was quite good, however when ever he was reading the story, that's exactly what it felt like. I kept thinking this is what someone who reads to children sounds like with the inflections...bar the story content of course. I hate to be harsh especially as I liked the book but a narrator can make or break a book for me.

    "gripping but gruesome"

The story was well-written and kept my interest., though ut was a bit too graphic and gruesome for my taste. But the narration was annoying with the narrator BEARING down on words, SQUEEZING them unnecessarily and then POPping them out at a higher register. He made all conversations sound as though the characters were hollering at one another.

I'm busy so I have little time to waste reading even average books. This tone is highly above average into nearly great. To me only a few books are great Catch 22 etc. I'm sure you will find this writing on par with some of the best. Well paced, well written.

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

I could not listen beyond the first few pages. The narrator's voice made it impossible to follow the story. I only later learned that he was the author too.

What could Will Patching have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

PLEASE, Mr Patching, get someonel else to read this story?

What didn’t you like about Will Patching’s performance?

His voice. His inflections. Putting the emphasis on the wrong words in the sentence. Did you even listen to yourself after reading it?

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

    NO

    Any additional comments?

I would like to listen to the story if read by another narrator.

If you could sum up Remorseless in three words, what would they be?

    Shocking, dark, wondedrful

    Any additional comments?

This was a really good listen with a wonderful plot. I have never read/listen to anything by this author. He gives a wonderful tale of mystery, suspense with crime and getting inside the head of a criminal. This is a dark book of crimes that will have you with your mouth open. Peter said he is innocence and claims that his brother did the killing and framed him. After serving 18 years of his life sentence he is up for parole putting everyone in a tailspin. The author takes you through his parole hearing, how it affects him and all those around him even his brother and a few doctors. It takes you through him getting out and all he does. There is no doubt this will shock you and surprises you as the author throws in some major twists. I thought I knew where this was going but I was so wrong. The author keeps you guessing at first you feel sorry for one and than the other. Never will you guess the ending and all that comes to pass.

I thought for the first time of narration the author didn’t do a bad job. His different character voices are outstanding. He could use a little work on his female voices but they are pleasant. His accent pulls you in and adds to the story. However he needs to work on how to the basics of narrating. He needs to slow down and take a moment between sentences or characters it is not a race to get done. I found it all blended too much together and I had a hard time keeping up. There are some changes in volume and quality of the voice that is very noticeable. With a little work Will could be an outstanding narrator. He did make this a believable story with having the emotions down for each character.

As for the rest of the book there were things I wasn’t sure why they were there. I didn’t feel that her ex needed to be gone into as much detail as the author gave. There is one or two other places I thought to much detail were given. However this was a very highly entertaining read/listen that I did really enjoy. True Crime has always been my favorite read. I have always found the mind a mystery of how it works and why some turn out so bad. I never could understand how someone could kill in cold blood or what makes a psychopath. I thought the author did an outstanding job of giving us some thought on this bring in characters that you could relate to and others that will truly shock you. This will leave you questioning our legal system in more than one way. I have to agree life should mean life there should be no parole. This is an action pack read with just the right amount of action give at the correct time. It is a very believable read/listen that is compelling and pulls you in. I would really love to read more from this author and if he takes his time and works on his narration along with a few other issues I would love to listen to more of his audios. If you are into Mystery, Thriller & Suspens, Crime Fiction or Serial Killers this is a book you do not want to miss.

Where does Remorseless rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

It's good. I don't listen to thriller audiobooks, preferring to read them instead. But I really did enjoy this one.

Who was your favorite character and why?

    Judy Finch

What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?

I liked that the female voices weren't too whiny. The sing song narration made it difficult for me to get into the book completely.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Not really. I was just entertained.

    Any additional comments?

While i appreciate the author narrating this, the sing song tone of voice did not suit the thriller. It would suit a non fiction better. But the book is rather well thought out and entertaining so don't let it deter you from picking this up.
