Richmond, Virginia: a serial killer is on the loose. Dr Kay Scarpetta is called in to help track the killer. The first book in the internationally bestselling Kay Scarpetta series.

I love the narrator, in this story. But in truth, I feel such crime novels like these, it is better to learn from the subject matter, than to focus simply on the character's state of mind or altered behaviour.
Patricia Cornwell writes in a technical way that doesn't detract from a good storyline. Her lead is Dr Kay Scarpetta. This is the first book in the series with a storyline of women being tied up and murdered in their own homes. No useful evidence is found, someone is leaking information to the press and Kay's department comes under suspicion to the point that she starts to doubt her own capabilities.
An enjoyable listen in the car for a long journey. Lorelei King is an excellent choice to narrate and she give body to the characters.
I started listening to audiobooks at night during bouts of insomnia. I enjoy crime fiction, interesting biographies but will try anything.
I read this some years ago and really enjoyed it. I enjoyed listening to it again, although the science has moved on a bit. In some ways this detracted from the story but taken at face value, I really enjoyed it again. Wish Patricia Cornwell hadn't started using a weird tense to phrase her more recent books.
Teaching Assistant and busy mum who loves books but never finds the time to sit down and read. Now I don't have to! Pure decadence!
Good introduction to characters, and excellent story but the whole thing was let down by the ending. It just felt rushed and disjointed and was a major disappointment. However I am not put off, and shall continue with the second book in the series in the hope that the endings improve.
Having listened to male voices reading up until this point, I at first found it difficult to get used to the female voice and found this a bit distracting. However, as time went on, I overcame this and the result was a terrific read with lots of clues and guessing as the book progresses. A real good read, well worth purchasing.
Thoroughly enjoyed this book, the narrator's voice was a bit irritating after awhile. The story line was very intense, easy enough to follow without lagging behind.
It was easy to get into & the descriptions was quite easy to pick up making you feel you were there.
"It held my attention"
Easy to listen to. It held my interest throughout.
Main protagonist. They were in every scene.
I did not like the detailing of torture during rape. I thought that gratuitous violence and not necessary detail. Not to my taste. I give it 5 stars because there is no 4.5 rating.
"An Interesting Twist"
It kept me guessing “who dunnit” through to the end. The plot would be good for a movie thriller.
A missing piece to the overall performance is that the narrator’s voice was a bit bland which unfortunately didn’t help to build the tension.
Not a must read, but a good way to pass the time.
