Summary

The murder has been solved. But has justice been done? Harry Hole is back in Oslo. He's been away for some time, but his ghosts have a way of catching up with him. The case that brings him back is already closed. There is no room for doubt: The young junkie was shot dead by a fellow addict. The police don’t want him back....

Denied permission to reopen the investigation, Harry strikes out on his own. Beneath the city's eerie tranquillity, he discovers a trail of violence and mysterious disappearances seemingly unnoticed by the police. At every turn Harry is faced with a conspiracy of silence. The criminals don’t want him back....

Harry is not the only one who is interested in the case. From the moment he steps off the plane, someone is watching his every move and tracing his every call. Someone wants him silenced.

Good listen

A good listen with some interesting twists in the story but not my favourite Jo Nesbo book.

Another good HH thriller

Enjoyed it- God plot with twists and cliff hangers.
Good narration but not sure about the accent or tone of the younger characters, a little odd. Anyway, my first HH Audible and I’ll probably read the rest as I did before.

Another great listen

Would you consider the audio edition of Phantom: A Harry Hole Thriller, Book 9 to be better than the print version?

Yes, the reading adds to the tension and story.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Harry Hole as always!

What does Sean Barrett bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

Brilliant voice, gets all the characters perfectly timed and you can really believe in them.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No as it takes some thinking about, a complex plot and lots of new and well known characters to get to grips with.

Any additional comments?

Yet another fantastic story from Jo Nesbo. It is a darker than usual Harry hole story but no worse for that. I'm looking forward to the next installment already. I would advise reading these in order as a lot of the books contain references to previous books which would not make sense if read out of order. Highly recommended.

I can't fault it

Superb book and superb narration. I'll be sorry when this series ends, Harry is now an old friend and my time with him is unfortunately coming to an end as I only have three more books to go.
A brilliant series, not to be missed.

Top form

More corruption and a little left field for Harry. Still compelling reading and a great ending

Welcome back Harry

Well...Jo Nesbo has done it again...another dark, complex Harry Hole book....I can't help it, I just love them all. This latest offering takes you on an emotional rollercoaster for Harry, as the plot twists and turns in the usual Nesbo fashion. Obviously enhanced by Sean Barrett's addictive voice, I thoroughly enjoyed Phantom...and am hoping for another Harry very soon....

The Price of Addiction

Phantom is a heartbreaking study of addiction - not just looking at the terrible price paid by the addict but also the dreadful effect it has on family and loved ones.
This is the most personal crime Harry has ever investigated, and the most difficult. Many of the characters we have grown to know and love over the course of the series appear in this book as Harry finds himself struggling to save those he loves whilst becoming embroiled with Russian drug lords and corrupt officials.
Everything we love and hate about Harry comes together in this novel as we race toward the conclusion. Sean Barret narrates the story as well as ever and has become the voice of Harry to me. An enthralling listen that leaves a lasting impression.

How much punishment can one man take?

This is a good book. Maybe not quite as good as The Leopard or The Snowman, but still a real right to end listen.

I do wonder just how much punishment poor old Harry can take?

Sean Barrett delivers another fabulous performance. It's a dead heat between Sean Barrett and Steven Pacey for best narrator ever. Barrett's consistency of voices gives fabulous consistency between voices (everyone from the same area even has the same accent) although his attention to detail does sometimes give the game away when we're not supposed to know who someone is. He does that characters voice and you know who it is. But I suppose I'd rather have this level of craft than a lesser narrator.

Just Police to listen to now :(
