Summary

The daunting task that confronts Gurney, once the NYPD's top homicide cop: determining the guilt or innocence of a woman already convicted of shooting her charismatic politician husband. Gurney quickly finds himself waging a dangerous battle of wits with a thoroughly corrupt investigator, a disturbingly cordial mob boss, a gorgeous young temptress, and a bizarre assassin whose childlike appearance has earned him the nickname Peter Pan. But the identity of the villain at the mystery's center turns out to be the biggest shock of all....

Strong protagonists and plot, great narration

Top notch performance - the narrator has pitched the character voices really well without distracting ftom the story. This along with satisfyingly rounded characters and intriguing plot makes for a great crime genre listen. Some clichés perhaps but it's so well done, just enjoy the ride.

Another great story.

The only negative l will point out at the start is that the recording quality of this production seemed somewhat lacking compared to the previous 3 novels in the series. Otherwise, Jeff Harding's voicing of the book was up to its usual superb standard, and John Verdon's characters just keep getting better and more complex in their natures. The storyline was action packed with a driving narrative to the end, and the final scenes were on a grander scale than before with a lovely twisting touch of Agatha Christie like exposition at the end which came as a surprise to me, in the best style of the late great Empress of Crime. I'll definitely be getting John Verdon's next novels.

Page turner with hero

Certainly up to usual standard and I love Jeff Harding's narration.
Also like the fact that relationships underpin the action.

Great Listen

This is the third of Verdon’s books that I have listened to and each time I find myself warming even more to the chief characters which have life-like nuances, indeed credible personalities. Jeff Harding‘s narration has also become more versatile and pleasing, with less of the monotone I have rather regretted in the past (Jack Reacher novels). The super-villain subjects of his investigations have to be twisted and complex in order properly to showcase his extraordinary abilities!

ANOTHER FABULOUS STORY!

I'm seriously addicted to John Verdons' novels with the Dave Gurney character! This is my 4th
of the series in a week!!
I adore Jeff's narration, great character voices and so very smooth and a pleasure to listen to. If anyone reading this, who hasn't read any of John Verdons' books before, I highly recommend that you start at his first novel. I'm a huge fan of Michael Connelly, Harlan Coben, and Alafair Burke, (to name a few), but turned to John Verdon because 'I ran out of their books to listen to'. I've not been disappointed!

The best yet!

We have found this series of books to be extremely well written, with excellent plots and believable characters, and of course with an excellent narrator. It is with great regret, therefore, that the next in the series changes the narrator; does the publisher not understand that, after four books, Jeff Harding IS the voice of the main characters? Alas therefore, we will be saying goodbye to these books now.

Excellent book

I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this audiobook, kept me entertained throughout, I felt the ending was a bit of a disappointment, I honestly cannot believe the killer would have been caught this way, I won’t spoil it for future listeners

Excellent pairing, once again..

John Vernon and Jeff Harding - a marriage made in heaven. The third book in the Gurney series. Perhaps the story is not quite as ingenious as that of book 2, but it’s a ‘page Turner’ nonetheless. Every minute enjoyable. Beautifully paced and beautifully written. Lovely to witness the development of the relationships between the characters across three books now. And Jeff Harding just executed it all beautifully. Highly recommended.

I want to give this 6 stars!

Totally absorbing right to the end. I love Dave Gurney and his characterisation. Not sure how I'll manage getting used to a new narrator in books though. Jeff Harding is the ultimate narrator and do much better served by these books than the Jack Reacher series.
