Summary

On a mild autumn afternoon in 1882, William Trenchard sits smoking his pipe in the garden of his comfortable family home. When the creak of the garden gate heralds the arrival of an unexpected stranger, he is puzzled but not alarmed. He cannot know the destruction this man will wreak on all he holds most dear.

Beautifully written

Such a long winding story, but I was compelled to stay with it. I would only recommend it to those who have the patience to do the same. Having said that which sounds like a negative, I loved Goddards descriptions, his fabulous settings of time and place. I also salute Michael Kitchen for his spelling binding reading

First class thriller

Just couldn’t wait to get to each chapter. It was a page turner if you can get that on an audible book!

Rxceptional.

Cross and double cross.. Winding and far from predictable. Enjoyed every minute.. Want to read more of this author.

Excellent mystery spin on The Return of Martin Guerre

This is a really well crafted tail. Engaging characters multiple twists and turns in terms of plot and a really clever denouement. I thoroughly recommend this as an engaging and compelling mystery novel.

Infuriating narration

Michael Kitchen’s idiosyncratic verbal mannerisms serve him well as Foyle on TV but he’s a terrible narrator. His stumbling delivery with inexplicable pauses and word-by-word slowness, coupled with emphasis on certain words for no discernible reason, drove me mad even though I’m a big fan of Foyle’s War.

It spoiled a very good story. What a pity they didn’t get Daniel Weyman to do it.
