Summary

Paganini – showman, womaniser, dazzling virtuoso – is one of the most fascinating characters in the history of classical music. His violin is now kept in Genoa, where it is played once every two years by the winner of an international competition. This year, an unsavoury art dealer is found dead in his hotel room the day after the concert. Clutched in his fist is a scrap of sheet music torn off a page that belongs to the competition winner. But how did the dead man get hold of it? And why? The police ask for violinmaker Castiglione to help them unravel a mystery that has gone unanswered for over a century.

A real surprise.

What made the experience of listening to Paganini's Ghost the most enjoyable?

This is not my usual choice of book, but really good.

Any additional comments?

Good plot - well read - and music link fascinating

I listen to a lot of audible books (whilst dog walking, ironing, driving to meetings etc) and I think this is probably the best I have listened to thus far. I came to this via Sean Barrett who I find an excellent reader but this particular download is a 100% on every score. The plot is good, the characters wonderfully drawn and the reading - very slow - is absolutely spot on. I cannot recommend it highly enough and I am now at this moment going to look at other titles from the author who I have not come across before.

Superb!

Many little mysteries rolled into one, with historical stories and, as always, superb narration by Sean Barrett. Thoroughly enjoyed this book.

Delightful...

Beautiful and engaging story, gently and intriguing, so much so that I found myself ‘googling’ Panganini’s jewelled violin. The historical content was fascinating and despite not being a classical music lover, I would have loved to have heard the music alongside the narrative. Sean Barrett, as ever, is superb. He lives and breathes the characters.

Nicely told story

Where does Paganini's Ghost rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Quite high, due to the combination of a good story and a good performance

What did you like best about this story?

The development and resolution of the mystery, interwoven with the very plausible musical details

Which scene did you most enjoy?

The quartet scene, quite early on.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The performance of the newly-discovered piece of music

Any additional comments?

I really enjoyed this audiobook and recommend it highly.

The narrator's voice and delivery perfectly matched the character in my mind. I found the developing mystery intriguing and enjoyed the apparently well-researched background musical details which were woven into it. It was also interesting to have the story set in an unfamiliar location, a relatively small Italian town rather than completely in major cities.

Excellent listen

What did you like most about Paganini's Ghost?

I enjoyed this book very much, the main character and his friends where very likeable, the best character was Paganini himself, it made me want to know much more about the man and I even listened to some of the music he composed, brilliant listen, give this book a try well worth a credit, or if lucky the daily deal which I think is a great idea.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

The book intrigued me and made me want to find out about Paganini and his ladies.

What would have made Paganini's Ghost better?

Edit out the mundane dialogue between characters.

Would you ever listen to anything by Paul Adam again?

Have you listened to any of Seán Barrett’s other performances? How does this one compare?
