Summary

"I need your help, Detective. Fire or water?"

Detective Robert Hunter of the LAPD's Homicide Special Section receives an anonymous call asking him to go to a specific web address - a private broadcast. Hunter logs on, and a show devised for his eyes only immediately begins.

But the caller doesn't want Detective Hunter to just watch; he wants him to participate, and refusal is simply not an option. Forced to make a sickening choice, Hunter must sit and watch as an unidentified victim is tortured and murdered live over the Internet.

The LAPD, together with the FBI, use everything at their disposal to electronically trace the transmission down, but this killer is no amateur, and he has covered his tracks from start to finish. And before Hunter and his partner, Garcia, are even able to get their investigation going, Hunter receives a new phone call. A new website address. A new victim. But this time the killer has upgraded his game into a live murder reality show where anyone can cast the deciding vote.

High on graphic killings. Low on quality storyline

Having listened to several of the Chris Carter novels with audible I have always enjoyed the experience. The narrator has been solid with the gravity required to portray the serious Detective Hunter. And with minor inflection he has managed to give life to the other character too. The plot lines have been dense and complex and gratifyingly dark.
Unfortunately in this book I found it falls flat on every level. Save for the ingenious ways to kill people, It lacks invention in basic story development and left holes in plot wide enough to drive a truck through. Characters were introduced, back stories laid out but with no further development or conclusion. The narrator was a solid Hunter as usual but lacked anything to liven up the others. It was hard to connect with the supporting cast of characters. But most of all this was a tepid and lacklustre attempt at an investigation of a crime that clearly had gravity, present day relevance and emotional context.
Overall very very disappointing.
Thankfully I’ve also read some of Carters later novels so I know he hasn’t lost his touch entirely this early in the series and does return to form. I haven’t totally given up on him, but this was a close call. Maybe I just won’t listen but read the books myself next time. That might help

Unputdownable but probably the most gruesome book I have ever read. So scary. Well read

Absolutely amazing!

Up till now I've read all the Robert Hunter books and this one is by far the best....boy am I going to be upset when I've listened to the whole series.

In this one we have another serial killer devising more devilish ways to kill people before Hunter and Garcia solve the case. Okay you could argue Chris Carters books may follow a tried and tested method but I don't care as each one has kept me glued to my buds and a lot of the time I've not seen the twist/bad egg coming, which is always a good thing.

Gory yes...dark yes....not for the squeamish yes...no sex scenes, a twisted individual defiantly.

Mr Judd narrates flawlessly and I'm surprised to see a new narrator for the next book, I can only hope his narration is as good. Totally recommend and I very rarely give 5 stars...

Usual Cater

I like the performance and the plot is complicated enough to keep me intereted, but there are too many details for me (which is typical of Carter) and I lose interest from time to time. It reminds me one of my professors. I really tried to do my best to listen to him, but he kept making digressions and my concentration just kept weakening. Same here. At times I had to listen to a Chapter twice because I missed an important turn, bored by the numbers "stretch 587, crash589" or by gore descriptions. Also,Robert Hunter is much too flawless for my liking...I don't believe he is for real...
