Summary

Amazing what bodily injury could do for a man.

A fall from a racehorse had left brilliant jockey Sid Halley dangerously depressed, with a wrecked hand and the need for a new career. And now a bullet wound was helping him find one. He'd been with a detective agency since his racing accident, but it wasn't until some two-bit hoodlum drilled a slug into his side that he was sent out on a case of his own.

That was where he met Zanna Martin, a woman who just might make life worth living again. But it was an even-money bet that he'd be killed before he had the chance.

Another good one

Dick Francis is brilliant. This (I think) is the first Sid Halley novel; it starts well and then improves; its the first time I've given 5 stars to a book for a while! If you like Dick Francis you will love this.

poor audio quality

Tony Britton reads brilliantly well. Sadly the technical quality is very poor, the sound levels vary along with the speed of playback which distorts the performance. The story itself is great, a Dick Francis classic.

Not great recording, but fantastic thriller story

Love the story (great characterisation, great theme, great writing), narration is fantastic (lovely descriptive voice, multiple different voices; my only complaint would be that Chico isn't how I hear him in my own head when reading - I think he's more like Phillip Glennister in Ashes to Ashes, but that's just personal) but every now and then, the recording itself changes tone/volume - obviously different recordings put together. Can be a bit annoying, having to adjust the volume

Marred by the old recording

Great story and narration as usual but the recording was dreadful with the sound levels changing randomly - presumably because it was an old recording.

Poor recording

I am not the first person to mention this problem with old recordings by Tony Britton. Not the narrators fault just technical issues with sound and balance.

I read most of these some years ago and am now returning via audio book. Still as well written and when the technical side works very well read.

I like this audiobook.

I like the books of Dick Francis anyway and this particular title is ably read by the late Tony Britton. Good to hear his narration again. Enjoyable.
