Humour and mystery are an unlikely coupling, but in Moon over Soho, book 2 of the Sunday Times best-selling PC Peter Grant series, written by talented author Ben Aaronovitch, fans are brought to tears with the hilarious endeavors of PC Peter Grant - Police Constable and wizard apprentice. This is a modern detective audiobook unlike any other and brilliantly narrated by English actor Kobna Holdbrook-Smith. PC Grant has embarked on a thrilling battle against the monsters and supernatural dangers that lurk in the shadows around London. Available now from Audible.
Summary
I was my dad's vinyl-wallah: I changed his records while he lounged around drinking tea, and that's how I know my Argo from my Tempo. And it's why, when Dr Walid called me to the morgue to listen to a corpse, I recognised the tune it was playing. Something violently supernatural had happened to the victim, strong enough to leave its imprint like a wax cylinder recording. Cyrus Wilkinson, part-time jazz saxophonist and full-time accountant, had apparently dropped dead of a heart attack just after finishing a gig in a Soho jazz club. He wasn't the first.
No one was going to let me exhume corpses to see if they were playing my tune, so it was back to old-fashioned legwork, starting in Soho, the heart of the scene. I didn't trust the lovely Simone, Cyrus' ex-lover, professional jazz kitten and as inviting as a Rubens portrait, but I needed her help: there were monsters stalking Soho, creatures feeding off that special gift that separates the great musician from someone who can raise a decent tune. What they take is beauty. What they leave behind is sickness, failure and broken lives.
And as I hunted them, my investigation got tangled up in another story: a brilliant trumpet player, Richard 'Lord' Grant - my father - who managed to destroy his own career, twice. That's the thing about policing: most of the time you're doing it to maintain public order. Occasionally you're doing it for justice. And maybe once in a career, you're doing it for revenge.

Moon over soho
Another fantasy story, I enjoyed this book of magic make believe story, lots of funny lines that made me smile. Not keen on the introduction music to each chapter but that was the only downside

thoroughly enjoyable
I can't work out whether the author has been in the police or just invents well, or has asked real policemen... anyway, the mixture of fantasy and convincingly gritty detail about the life of a copper in the Metropolitan police works very well. The narrator, as many others have said, does an excellent job of the voices, maintaining the generally high standard of audible narrators that I have listened to. If you don't care for fantasy generally you could still like this story. Thoroughly recommended.

Not as good as the first book
There was just too much unnecessary and badly written sex, I found it unbalanced the book.

Moon over Soho
This is my favourite rivers book. A great blend of police procedure and magic. Great characters and a marvellous blend of story lines with excellent final action.

music to my ears
I've just finished book 2 and no. 3 is lined up. The characters and storyline are charming and dark - I can imagine all this activity really going on and can't wait to visit the funfair by the source of the Thames. The narration is perfect - easy and smooth, just like the snippets of jazz between chapters. I'm really looking forward to hearing how things shape up and what new weirdnesses are in store.

So Over the Moon with Moon over Soho
This is the second in the Peter Grant books and follows the events of the first one. It's a great fast paced story with well realised characters that continue to grow and develop. You can tell that Aaronovitch is a TV writer, he's left the world more developed than the first book and created some excellent through lines for future books. I love these books, I just used my credit to buy the third in the collectiona and will be listening straight away. A warning to the casual listener (like me) They're addictive.
A huge part of the enjoyment of the books is down to Kobna Holdbrook-Smith. The quality of the writing makes me feel like i'm watching a TV series and KHS ability to vocalise all the characters so distinctly and so clearly makes it absolutely captivating. I hope these books continue to be written for some time - as I will definitely be listening to them.

Second in the series, takes the story much deeper
You need to read Rivers of London to get where this is coming from, but unlike some second books this expands the story an deepens it, with introductions to new magical beings and an antagonist who survives the book and should continue to play a part in future books (this isn't a spoiler - the story weaving is far cleverer than that!)

One of my favourites of the series
This is my third time listening to the series. Kobna Holdbrook-Smith is an absolutely brilliant narrator and I can't think of anyone better to bring Peter Grant and this series to life.

Best comedy lines ever in a book
This book is fabulous, crime and magic and so beautifully written with the best one liners ever! I love the narrator too. But this book is just an absolute pleasure to listen to. The writing is so good it means you can actually just enjoy them for the writing.
