Editor reviews
Humour and mystery are an unlikely coupling, but in Moon over Soho, book 2 of the Sunday Times best-selling PC Peter Grant series, written by talented author Ben Aaronovitch, fans are brought to tears with the hilarious endeavors of PC Peter Grant - Police Constable and wizard apprentice. This is a modern detective audiobook unlike any other and brilliantly narrated by English actor Kobna Holdbrook-Smith. PC Grant has embarked on a thrilling battle against the monsters and supernatural dangers that lurk in the shadows around London. Available now from Audible.
Summary
I was my dad's vinyl-wallah: I changed his records while he lounged around drinking tea, and that's how I know my Argo from my Tempo. And it's why, when Dr Walid called me to the morgue to listen to a corpse, I recognised the tune it was playing. Something violently supernatural had happened to the victim, strong enough to leave its imprint like a wax cylinder recording. Cyrus Wilkinson, part-time jazz saxophonist and full-time accountant, had apparently dropped dead of a heart attack just after finishing a gig in a Soho jazz club. He wasn't the first.
No one was going to let me exhume corpses to see if they were playing my tune, so it was back to old-fashioned legwork, starting in Soho, the heart of the scene. I didn't trust the lovely Simone, Cyrus' ex-lover, professional jazz kitten and as inviting as a Rubens portrait, but I needed her help: there were monsters stalking Soho, creatures feeding off that special gift that separates the great musician from someone who can raise a decent tune. What they take is beauty. What they leave behind is sickness, failure and broken lives.
And as I hunted them, my investigation got tangled up in another story: a brilliant trumpet player, Richard 'Lord' Grant - my father - who managed to destroy his own career, twice. That's the thing about policing: most of the time you're doing it to maintain public order. Occasionally you're doing it for justice. And maybe once in a career, you're doing it for revenge.

Great continuation of the Peter Grant series.
If you could sum up Moon Over Soho in three words, what would they be?
Amusing, compelling, easy-going.
What other book might you compare Moon Over Soho to, and why?
The other Peter Grant books
Which character – as performed by Kobna Holdbrook-Smith – was your favourite?
PC Grant. I hope that if they ever make this series into a movie they use Kobna Holdbrook Smith. I love his voice, the velvety undertones and clear London character.
Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Occasional hah hah, not belly laugh or laugh 'till you cry.
Any additional comments?
I've just downloaded the 3rd book in the series and thought of the 4th/5th but decided to await the pleasure later in the year. I am a big fan of series' and this is a very good one, I suppose similar to the Philip Pullman Sally Lockhart series.

Second Book, Still Great!
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes! London intimately described; jazz, the supernatural and police drama -- the elements in the PC Grant series all appeal to me and it is very well written. Anyone who is interested in London will enjoy following Peter Grant as he goes on his street-wise way through the capital.
Any additional comments?
I particularly enjoy the construction of the history and context of the magical world conjured by this series of books.

Enjoyable for the characters
This books was enjoyable for the characterisation by Hollbrook-Smith but the story lacked excitement for me. There didn't seem to be a lot going on and then it kind of came to an end. I still love the characters and am looking forward to continuing the series. More of Nightingale would be good.

Nice trip
A gentle journey through a book well written and read. Enjoyable not for its adrenaline, but more for its steady paced trip into a well thought universe that lets us grow with the main character.

Excellent book; adults only!
This book was at least as good as the first in the series. The plots and writing were first rate. I had to turn my speaker off when my husband came home during some of the sex scenes. Parts were rather racy, but at the end of the book you find they are integral to the story. I will definitely be getting the next instalment.

Too much s3x for me!
Give me ghosts and magic and police and crime but leave out the hanky panky please! I guessed the ending very early on so was left with 5 hours for the story to get to the point. Narrator is great though.
