Editor reviews

Humour and mystery are an unlikely coupling, but in Moon over Soho, book 2 of the Sunday Times best-selling PC Peter Grant series, written by talented author Ben Aaronovitch, fans are brought to tears with the hilarious endeavors of PC Peter Grant - Police Constable and wizard apprentice. This is a modern detective audiobook unlike any other and brilliantly narrated by English actor Kobna Holdbrook-Smith. PC Grant has embarked on a thrilling battle against the monsters and supernatural dangers that lurk in the shadows around London. Available now from Audible.

Summary

I was my dad's vinyl-wallah: I changed his records while he lounged around drinking tea, and that's how I know my Argo from my Tempo. And it's why, when Dr Walid called me to the morgue to listen to a corpse, I recognised the tune it was playing. Something violently supernatural had happened to the victim, strong enough to leave its imprint like a wax cylinder recording. Cyrus Wilkinson, part-time jazz saxophonist and full-time accountant, had apparently dropped dead of a heart attack just after finishing a gig in a Soho jazz club. He wasn't the first.

No one was going to let me exhume corpses to see if they were playing my tune, so it was back to old-fashioned legwork, starting in Soho, the heart of the scene. I didn't trust the lovely Simone, Cyrus' ex-lover, professional jazz kitten and as inviting as a Rubens portrait, but I needed her help: there were monsters stalking Soho, creatures feeding off that special gift that separates the great musician from someone who can raise a decent tune. What they take is beauty. What they leave behind is sickness, failure and broken lives.

And as I hunted them, my investigation got tangled up in another story: a brilliant trumpet player, Richard 'Lord' Grant - my father - who managed to destroy his own career, twice. That's the thing about policing: most of the time you're doing it to maintain public order. Occasionally you're doing it for justice. And maybe once in a career, you're doing it for revenge.

Read by Kobna Holdbrook-Smith.

Not as enjoyable as the first

Loved the first book in the series. But haven’t enjoyed this one as much. Performance was good and well read, story just not the greatest, felt like I was wanting something bigger to happen

Very different type of book

This is my second book by this author and while its definitely not my usual type of book I have to admit I'm becoming more involved in the characters and storyline than I expected. The very unusual stories are really well written and the reader is suberb. Even though I struggled through the first I have enjoyed the second and now I'm looking forward to the third.

Wizardry on the streets of London

I love all the characters and the way they evolve in this second book of the series. Most of all, as a Londoner myself, I love Aaronovitch’s description of the West End of the capital which allows you to run through the streets in your mind alongside Peter. The snippets of history and explanations about how things came about in different areas of London are an added bonus. Love it!

Yet another 6

Not what I’d normally read, but after enjoying the first book - I gave the second a go. Actually found it even better the first and finished it in 3 days. I like the style of the book, not as slow and as obvious as most other detective novels and the twist on magic is also original. Very nice. On to book 3.

Moon over Soho

Getting better and better. The story ace , I think the ambulance being stolen is pure genius . The characters are all unique and necessary to tell the story and the narrator well what a star .

Great Sequel

I really enjoyed the first book and this sequel did not disappoint. Takes off exactly where the other left off and is ripe for another. I really hope there is more. I do love the Policing / London angle, which is the bit I thought would be least attractive to me (not liking police dramas in the least), but the Ben Aaronovitch merges magic with the everyday brilliantly.

Really great narration by Kobna Holdbrook-Smith. Every character is brought to life with their own 'voice'.

Extremely entertaining! Fingers crossed there is more coming.

An interesting and unusual read

When I first decided to buy this book I was a little apprehensive as I usually opt for the more traditional sci fi novels. However I was really pleased.

The book is well written and the narration is great adding atmosphere to the audio book.

If you know the UK you will be happy to know that lots of different places streets etc are mentioned, this helps to build the overall picture in your mind and adds to the enjoyment.

Great Book.

Amusing

This is the second book of the series which is again amusing and entertaining, if slightly far fetched. Aaronovitch knows London well and it is fun to try to trace his characters through the detail of roads they travel - was he a cab driver once?

If you like London then enjoy walking the streets of London, the jokes and quirkiness of the story. A excellent narrator who makes the characters come alive.
