I'd certainly recommend to any fans of Josh Lanyon's writing. It gives a good flavour of some varied stories.
Out of the six stories, three are counted as in my 'favourites' for the author - Dark Horse, Cards on the Table and Don't Look Back . All of them are classic Lanyon with an engaging story, great sense of place and character, and a good mystery. One other one - Lovers and Other Strangers - was very good. The other two didn't work so well for me but that was more to do with the stories themselves than the narration. I thought Blood Red Butterfly was a little dull and A Vintage Affair is excellent right up until a scene towards the end which I felt marred the remaining of the story.
I wasn't sure about Lance Greenfield at first but his voice grew on me and he was good at nuanced distinctions between the characters. Really liked Chris Gebauer's voice for A Vintage Affair. He set a good pace and drew me into the story quickly, plus I could easily tell between the characters. Jason Clarke was also good but at times I struggled to differentiate between who was talking,
Overall, if you are looking to try out this author, then this is very good value at over 24 hours of listening, plus you get a nice range of stories.
I really enjoyed these novellas. They were all very different and easy to listen to. I have ordered further books by this author. The narration of each story was fantastic. Each story read in a very engaging manor. Would recommend this series of books to anyone.
"Great travelling companion"
Great for travelling, this box set of 6 Lanyon novellas keeps you entertained from start to end. Great story telling, great narrator and a real value for money bundle. Love to see more of these in the audible store.
"Josh is the Best!!!"
I'm actually listening to his short stories again. He develops characters like no other while building mystery and tension through great story telling. I can't wait for more Novellas from him!
Yes. Each story, being a short story, allowed the writer to condense his artistry without fillers. The romance and sexual episodes were sensual but not overblown into porno. More like a normal part of life. Nice themes where boy meets boy.
Narrator captured the voices very well.
"It takes aman to write a gay mystery"
Six qreat mysterys with great storytelling and romance. A knockout!! Each novella was a mystery but independent of the others. All six were intriguing.
"Generally a pleasant listen"
Cards on the Table and Don't Look Back were really good, definitely my favorites out of the whom bunch. The Dark Horse and Lovers And Other Strangers were also nice. A Vintage Affair was ok, but kind of boring at times, with the weakest mystery and a bit of a cringy scene near the end of the story. Blood Red Butterfly was the weakest one overall, with the whole premise being uncomfortably unbelievable. All in all it was a positive experience :)
I enjoyed all of the novellas, the narration made them even better. I found myself listening to the stories at home and in the car. (I typically only listen when I'm in the office) if you are looking for hood narration, good plots - buy this set!
"Josh Lanyon is my all time favorite
I've listened to most Mr. Lanyon books and can't wait to rent the
extra one. Keep em coming. Thank you Audible
"Did it again, Joshy...did it again..."
This is good...get it...you won't be sorry...the ONLY reason I didn't give it 5 stars was story 5. Get thru #5..it's worth listening to, as drudgingly as it seems thru most of the story, but it's worth all the other ones...or at least, this pig thinks so..no refund for this one!
"Thrillers & relationships worked out simulaneously"
Bonafide mysteries cum love stories
I was on edge in almost all of them.
2 of the narrators' voices were strong. One was higher pitched more effeminate. So I stopped listening to the story he narrated whose setting was in the south. It may be that this is how the narrator was directed to speak.
I was tearyat tmes when the ingenue guy is finally wrapped in the arms of the man he loves, although he never thought this person could be trusted to love him back.
Good plot construction, good writing with creative metaphors. I'd recommend it.
My favorite is "Lovers and other Strangers" whose setting is on an island town off Maine. When I read it a second time from the beginning I see the significance of many setting and character details that I glossed over at first. This story is the one that lingered with me a few days.
