Two girls go missing. Only one will return.
The couple that offers the highest amount will see their daughter again. The losing couple will not. Make no mistake. One child will die....
When nine-year-old best friends Charlie and Amy disappear, two families are plunged into a living nightmare. A text message confirms the unthinkable; that the girls are the victims of a terrifying kidnapping.
And when a second text message pits the two families against each other for the life of their children, the clock starts ticking for D.I. Kim Stone and the squad.
Seemingly outwitted at every turn, as they uncover a trail of bodies, Stone realizes that these ruthless killers might be the most deadly she has ever faced, and that their chances of bringing the girls home alive are getting smaller by the hour....
Untangling a dark web of secrets from the families' past might hold the key to solving this case. But can Kim stay alive long enough to do so? Or, will someone's child pay the ultimate price?

I have now listened to all 3 books of this series, all narrated by Jan Cramer. After the first book I was critical of the narration but I'm really glad I persevered. As ever, the story was fast paced and gripping, but the narration this time was superb. If you are hesitating over this audiobook due to doubts about the narrator, then go for it - you won't be disappointed.
A truly gripping tale, fast paced, gruesome in parts, full of twists and turns. It depicts humanity at its worst and at its best. The characters were gritty shaped by childhood experiences. It's about the power of love, how important it is and the devastation to the human soul when there is none present. Highly recommended.
Someone else mentioned that they didn't rate the narrator in the first book, but thought she was brilliant in this one - I could not agree more, she was excellent.
The story line was the best one yet. In fact I would go as far as to say this is the best detective book I have read to date (and I have read a lot! Highly recommend, I do think it is best to read the books in order, although you can read them all individually.
This book had me on the edge of my seat, and would make a brilliant TV series.
Felt there should be a difference narrator. The story line was excellent and kept you held till the very end. Very much enjoyed it and found myself listening not wanting to miss a moment.
This was an excellent story, really gripping from start to finish. Can't wait to read the next Kim Stone instalment. I've ready one previously however this is definitely my favourite. Thought I'd guessed the bad guy but I was wrong, excellent writing and great delivery.
I have really enjoyed the first three Kim Stone books. I couldn't stop listening until I knew what would happen to the girls! Very likable characters and well written. Like the other two books I found it quite far fetched and had a few plot holes, but still entertaining and enjoyable to read. I hope the autor is planning on more in the Kim Stone series but please for the love of god fire the narrator!
The detective seemed pretty clueless, overly self assured and with a very flat sense of humour. The story itself was clever, although the characters of the evil characters were not well drawn out.
There are some difficult scenes in this book however they draw you in and you feel like you are with the team as they try and solve the case I was gripped and can not wait for the next one.

Overall I have an interesting relationship with this series.
First I cannot stand Kim Stone, rather I like her team, and her dog. It's not that she's not well written or believable it's just that I find her downright unpleasant. On that account, I don't really like her or the books, since they revolve around her - hence the loss of two stars. But the plot lines are so damn intriguing, I love a good mystery.
If you like Peter James, I reckon you'll like Angela Marston.
"I love the curve balls!"
Not always predictable!
I really like it when I can't guess where the story is going - Angela Marsons's book (all of them actually) offer refreshing cases and a team I love!
I love DI Kim and her team - they are great together.
Yes!! All of her books make you want to do this.
"Best DI Kim Stone book so far"
Everything about this book was fantastic.
The suspense was gripping, characters relatable, and style is wonderful.
This book has been the most graphic of the series so far, some parts a bit disturbing, but perfect for the development of the story.
If you a crime suspense junky, you shouldn't miss this one
"Loved this book!"
Do yourself a favor and listen to this book and series. You will not regret it.
A great book to listen to on a long trip. .
Will definitely listen to the other books in this series.
I read the reviews and wanted to like this but I just couldn't get interested enough to enjoy it. I kept finding myself rewinding back several times because I couldn't remember what I just heard . I can't pinpoint it but it just didn't grab me , didn't make me want to know more. I did finish it but it was difficult.
I absolutely loved this book. it is very well written and worth listening to. I will recommend this book.
The story line was decent, but there was something about either the writing or the narrating that caused me to not be able to pay enough attention. It was one of those books that didn't grip me, and I found myself constantly needing to back up 30 or 60 seconds, or sometimes to the beginning of the chapter. After trudging through like this until maybe two-thirds of the way through, I finally decided that it wasn't worth it to continue this way and finish the book. It's kind of a shame, because I wanted to know how it ended. However, the book wasn't compelling enough for it to matter all that much. Oh well--off to a new title...
Kept me guessing even after the reveal. Make time for this book because I couldn't put it down!
Angela never ceases to amaze me, how can one possible explain how or why they like the book without giving away the best parts. You always think that you have it figured out and then BOOM...you are shocked out of your mind.
This was my first time and I enjoyed every moment of it. Especially when she would change her voice for one character to the next.
"Another great Kim Stone story!"
I keep coming back for more of the Stone series because I love the performance of the narrator and the storyline...can't wait for the next one!
