Summary

Struggling through another Edinburgh winter Rebus finds himself sucked into a web of intrigue that throws up more questions than answers.

Was the Lord Provost's daughter kidnapped or just another runaway? Why is a city councillor shredding documents that should have been waste paper years ago? And why on Earth is Rebus invited to a clay pigeon shoot at the home of the Scottish Office's Permanent Secretary?

Sucked into the machine that is modern Scotland, Rebus confronts the fact that some of his enemies may be beyond justice....

'Real' Intrigue

Once again Ian Rankin takes the stories for real families and weaves them into a very believable narrative - Rebus is a small player in a big pond - but that does not put him off - as ever he wants to get to the truth - and justice. Once again well drawn characters inhabit this book of intrigue in high places.

Excellent

I read this novel years ago probably when it first came out. I have been finding it so hard to find decent audiobooks that I thought I would try this one again knowing that I would probably have forgotten most of the plot, which was indeed the case! What a treat it turned out to be, even second time around. Marvellous to listen to such a well crafted novel, full of well drawn characters and a great plot, beautifully read. The combination of great writing and great narration seems to be incredibly hard to find these days. I think I will need to revisit more of Ian Rankin’s back catalogue.

Gripping

I'm not sure what I love most, Rankin's story or McPherson's entertaining telling of it!

Sleekit politicians and entrepreneurs

Rebus is drawn into a web of corruption and obfuscation at the highest levels of pre-Devolution Establishment. Ian Rankin's novels offer a social history of Edinburgh and beyond, worth revisiting in order now and again, provoking both nostalgia and recognition that many things are better. In this book, computers come to every polis in Lothian & Borders, most of whom are still coming to terms with mobile phones (unsmart, as yet).
Unpredictable exciting tale.

A Very Different Rebus Story

This latest instalment of the Rebus series is quite different to previous ones.

It still has murders and twists and turns but this time the focus is on corruption and greed.

It’s been good to see how Rebus has developed further. His character has become more rounded whilst still displaying his characteristic wit and humour.

Once again James MacPherson brings all the characters to life, and in this episode there are a lot of them.

If I had any complaint, it would be the ending. I was left wanting more and I felt it was like a cliff hanger.

Slow to build but gets better and better

Great story with multiple layers, story starts slow and builds with multiple layers and case developments being revealed and unpicked.

Let down by lack of ending.

I'll finish my review when Mr. Rankin can be bothered to finish the book. No wonder the American market made him do so!

Worst ending to a book ever.

Good listen

I do enjoy listening to these books. However, there were times that the plot and so many characters left me confused.
