Summary

In Moscow a serial killer is on the loose - taking his victims' hair as a souvenir, carefully removing the buttons from their clothes. For Militia Colonel Dimitri Danilov, a good cop with a bad personal life, catching this madman is a matter of pride. But then the killer brings the U.S. government into the case. The latest victim is an American embassy economist, the beautiful niece of a powerful U.S. senator, and a woman with kinky secrets of her own. Now Danilov must team up with elite FBI agent Bill Cowley. And for the two cops, finding the killer will suddenly become much more than a job.

Moscow noire

I worked with Brian on the Daily Sketch in the Sixties but had not got around to reading (or listening to) his novels until now. Shame on me! This is the best thriller I’ve encountered for years.. Plot twists worthy of Chandler, characterisation in Le Carre class. I’ve got some catching up to do.

Quite misogynistic

The women in this book are all sex objects or hags. none have complex identities and serve as reflective surfaces for all the men.
It doesn't get better and the killer turns out to be the obvious suspect.

Washington v Washing Machine

In depth investigation into tangles at The US Embassy in Moscow, involving practically everyone inside, their sexual proclivities, several shop soiled Russian officials and pressure from US politicians at home after a series of murders. So much dirty laundry washed and rewashed. Like Cluedo for adults, this tale is complex enough to tax most brains. Dick Chasey lol.

Good narration, but for a story that includes Chapter breaks, it was confusing to switch between the "killer" and the other MCs in the same voice in the same paragraph (a clue?).

The length of the book allows the listener to be fully engrossed, which is very enjoyable and satisfying. ENJOYABLE

A real surprise

A well crafted story with plenty of twists and turns, which fast became real page turner so to speak.

Unfortunate narration for UK listeners

I enjoyed the story and was kept engaged throughout, however for UK listeners the some of the accents that the narrator uses are far too close to the accent used for an insurance comparison company's adverts. The whole book was populated by meerkats for me
