In 1912, John Wade and his brother, William - children of the American consul - were kidnapped off the street in Chungking, China, and raised in the house of Eunuch Chang, the city's master criminal. Twenty-five years later, John is the eunuch's most valuable ward, a trained assassin and swindler, and William has become a talented forger.
On the brink of World War II, China is in chaos. When William betrays Eunuch Chang and escapes to central China, a place of ferocious warlords and bandits, John begins a desperate search to save his brother, while Eunuch Chang hunts them both.

"What a ride!"
Listening to this story reminded me of being read to by Mrs. Little, my 5th grade teacher. I was mesmerized. The story was set in China and had a cast of characters that boggles the mind. The plot raced along at break-neck speed and it was hard to shut it off. I was sorry when it was over. Have a listen and be transported to another time and place and feel like a kid again.
"Thanks for remembering the dog"
The story was good but I got lost with so much details about all the blood and guts.
I quit this about 2 hours from the end. The story premise is interesting and the writing is good, but it desperately needed editing. The second half of the book just goes around in circles, with the same things happening over and over, dressed in different clothing. The historical aspect is engaging, the characters are good, but the action was increasingly hard to believe.
"love the story!"
the storyline was catching. the narrator was awesine and kept me interested wanting to read more.
Fans of James Clavelle's Asian series will love this novel. Different from Clavelle, Thayer skips much of the background and jumps right into his tale. He has a gift for character building, a very good thing since we miss a major element of the story, the kidnapping of the hero as a five year old some 25 years before.
Set in China just after the Great War, we are exposed to the mysterious cultures of China. The Japanese have begun their brutal conquest of China and the American presence is more as observers. Against this back drop is a story of betrayal, warlords, gangsters and thieves. The action is riveting.
This is really a 4.5, the only drawback being that I probably won't listen again. Boy am I glad I listened once!
"Like going to the movies"
I fully enjoyed listening to this book. The story held my interest and I was very pleased with the performance. I have been reading my books i with the Kindle and really was able to see the books story as it was really sad to me.
"Started slow then picked up speed!"
I really enjoyed this book after about the first 2 hours. I honestly thought it started very slow, so much so I almost gave up. However, once it started I couldn't put it down. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a multi character book with a good amount of action. I also would have to say a more patient person. If you are a reader who won't finish a book of it doesn't hook you in the first chapter then I would pass on this book. Overall I really did enjoy it and am glad I stuck with it.
"Loved listening to the is book"
I highly recommend this audiobook. The narration was excellent. The story was full of adventure. The setting, China preWWW II, was interesting. The ending was completely satisfying.
"Beautifully written and narrated"
I highly recommend this novel. I'm going to start a journey through his remaining books and hope they live up to House of Eight Orchids.
