Summary

Malcolm Pembroke never expected to make a million pounds without making enemies. Nor did he expect his latest wife to be brutally murdered. All the clues suggest the killer comes from close to home, but after five marriages and nine children, that still leaves the field wide open.

When he find his own life in danger, Pembroke entrusts his safety to his estranged son, Ian, an amateur jockey; and through him discovers a compulsive new outlet for his financial expertise. Soon he's playing the international blood stock market for incredible stakes. Not the safest bet for a man on the run from avaricious relatives. Particularly when one of them's got a bomb.

Production Issues

Really good story. Great performance. Be aware that the digital version was clearly created from aging masters because, at times, it is like listening to a poor cassette tape copy. If you are prepared to put up with that I'd still highly recommend this audiobook.

A great book

I’m a big fan of Dick Francis (and Felix Francis) and love their books. This is well read, as well as being well written. This one is my ‘go to comfort book’ of all of Francis books. It’s a whodunnit, with the racing world as the backdrop, as always. But somehow it seems gentler (despite the murders!) than some of the others. You don’t need to be a racing firm for horses fan to read this book, and I don’t think it necessarily helps if you are… but I do find all of Francis‘s books are incredibly well researched. Obviously his knowledge of the racing world, but in this book, the knowledge behind goldmining, international racing and gold in general is very interesting.

Poor quality sound

The sound quality is very poor in this recording. Sounds like it was recorded on an ancient reel to reel machine inside a bathroom with the shower running! The narrator sounds like he has had a couple of diazepam washed down with a bottle of gin. Unfortunately Audible wont let me return the book because I paid for it and didn't use one of their credits. Disappointing.

The saying about not being able to choose your relatives comes to mind.

Thought I had actually read all Dick Francis’ books but this one slipped through the net. I listened over a weekend and was able to keep track of the characters……a substantially sized family!
Compulsive listening thanks to the author/ narrator combination. The audio is a little odd in places ( not as bad as some in this series) but at least they have been preserved.

Intriguing and enjoyable.

Whodunnit based around around a large family with, as ever, horse racing interwoven into the story.
