Summary

Life in rural Blanco County, Texas, isn't what most folks would call exciting - and that suits game warden John Marlin just fine. He's happy to spend his days and nights protecting the local wildlife from poachers. But when the tequila-slamming, skirt-chasing treasurer of the local Rotary Club goes missing and his vehicle is found in the river the day after a flood, Marlin finds himself in charge of the search efforts.

At nearly the same time, a nearby house explodes in a shower of drug paraphernalia, and an exotic car turns up stolen from the missing man's barn. Marlin and Sheriff Bobby Garza are soon overwhelmed, trying to figure out how everything connects together. It isn't long before events begin to spiral out of control.

Edgar Award-nominated author Ben Rehder keeps the plot moving and the laughs coming in another spectacularly funny crime novel straight out of the zaniest imagination in Texas.

Another good one

Loved it. Another good story with John Marlin in charge of another case. Good to see all the other characters back. Story full of humor. The only thing that spoilt it for me was the narrator.

Enjoyable series

This was an interesting story, lots of twists and turns with a bad guy I didn’t see coming which always adds to the enjoyment.
The author does a good job, I quite like his drawl it fits the story.
I really like the core characters in this series particularly Red and Billy Don, I look forward to seeing what they get up to next.

Don't feel guilty for sitting back and enjoying

I enjoyed this book. This is book four in the series and other than getting to know the characters better you don't need to listen to the books in order but as they are a lot of fun I would suggest you do. The story does jump from character to character as they tell there part in the story and it can get a bit confusing keeping them straight but it does all come together in the end and is explained. What makes this such a good series is the characters, even the inept Red and Billy Don make you smile as they try to pull off another get rich scheme that never quite works. The mystery was good and I like it when the story starts to come together and the characters put all the clues together. I love animals and wasn't sure about listening to a series where hunting plays such a prominent role but this series has caught my imagination and I am off to start book five.
A house burns down to the ground, a car is trapped in a flooded river and the owner is missing along with a new car it is game warden John Marlins job to find some answers. He finds more questions than answers like was the man really drowned in the river or is it all a hoax and he is on the run? Marlins best friend Phil Coby seems to be caught up in it too, as someone is taking pot shots at him. They better be careful or they might just get more than they bargained for with Phil. But how is it all connected? And what about the boy who owns the burnt down house, where is he and his girl friend? So one knows more than they are saying and its Marlin who will have to get to the bottom of it.
This is the fourth book and the fourth different narrator for this series. I think the author has wound a winner with one and hope he becomes the voice of John Marlin because he has a pleasant voice and uses it well.
