Publisher's Summary

Before the long nightmare ended, Darcy would often wish her mother had not opened that letter from an unknown woman. But, she did open it and shared it with her daughter, plunging both Darcy Campbell and Flora Tucker into a tale of an unsolved mystery, a web of secrets, and the discovery of an unsuspected traitor.

In tracking down clues about the disappearance of a young woman, Darcy and Flora leave their hometown of Levi, Oklahoma, and drive to Amarillo, Texas, then back again. Following leads that have long been covered, both women find more than one surprise including some discoveries about themselves.

    "Great author"

I miss the first narrator. It is always disconcerting not hearing the voice you have associated with the characters from the first book.

** I was given a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review **

Darcy and Flora are a mother/daughter sleuthing duo....and when they get a letter asking them to investigate the death of another mothers daughter, they take on the case...as they get into details, things get kind of dangerous and some things come to light that were meant to be kept secret...this keeps you on the edge of your seat and was narrated really well...I recommend this to all my cozy mystery lovers 100%!!!!

What did you like best about this story?

Grave Shift by Barbara Burgess and Blanche Day Manos is an average mystery. The two main characters, mother Flora and daughter Darcy, are both widows. The daughter, a reporter, has come home to heal and regroup after the death of her husband. This is the second book in a series but there are no spoilers and this book stands alone.

    "Lighthearted Mystery"

Grave Shift is a fun whodunit that keeps a reader's interest. Apparently second in a series (Darcy & Flora Cozy Mystery), it is easily read as a stand-alone book. Darcy and her mother, Flora, are sweet talked into investigating the 2-year-old disappearance of a local woman when they get a letter from the woman's mother asking them to help find her daughter. The author keeps you guessing right up until the end. The story is interesting and the characters are charming. With earthquakes and mountain lions, first and second husbands, a little romance, and lots of investigating, these two women are bound and determined to solve the mystery of the disappearing woman. Michelle Babb does a great job of narration on the audiobook, giving each of the individuals a unique voice. Her voice is easy to listen to and makes the listening experience a pleasant one.

A great Mom and daughter team cozy mystery. Flora and Darcy are at it again when they receive a letter in the mail about a missing woman, a case that was never solved. So many twists, turns and heart pounding adventure on every line I listened to. Michelle Babb has so much talent and a great voice in making a story come life. I listened to this story in two days and I am planning on listening to it again!

    "Ho Hum & Comfortable."

Not thrilling and not mysterious. This listen was just slow. The story was slow, the narrator was slow. It was a nice story, but it was not gripping like I would have expected. I kept waiting to be sucked into this world and go through it alongside the main character, but it just never happened. Some of the descriptive passages seemed to placed in the story just to place a descriptive passage into the story as if were some kind of writing assignment.

I really had a hard time with the slow drawl of the narrator and found her a chore to listen to. A little southern drawl would have been nice and added to the flavor of the story, but it just seemed over the top and prevented me from really becoming fully immersed.

    "Mother and Daughter Sleuths!"

An enjoyable cozy mystery. This is the first book I've listened to in this series. I liked the mother /daughter team of Flora and Darcy, who find themselves solving a murder mystery. The narration was well done. The characters were excellently portrayed and easy to differentiate .

    Story
    "This is a book where 3+5 = 4"
Where does Grave Shift rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

To me the performance of the narrator rated in the top 10 of all the audiobooks I've listened to so far. The story, however, dragged it for me all the way up to near the end, when it began to zip. It was due to the narrator, that I was willing to go along for the ride.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

I would have picked up the pace and have them do more than sitting and talking to people or driving to talk to the next person. The ending is nicely spectacular and creative,so I don't think the entire book is boring. The narrator made it possible for me to fall into setting and the voices of the character when the story began to drag.

Have you listened to any of Michelle Babb’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

This is my first listening to Michelle Babs narration. I hope to find others that she has done so I can see if she is actually from the area that the characters are from or if she has an entire closet full of voices. I am from New York State and did not find anything hokey about the country voices that I heard, but then I haven't heard a lot. It didn't make me squirm and I didn't feel like she denigrated the part of the country that the people were from.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No, it wasn't a gripping story. At least until the very end.

    Any additional comments?

I would be willing to read the author's other works, since I don't like to dismiss an author after one read.
