Publisher's Summary

November, and evening is closing in as DI Jack Caffery arrives to interview the victim of a stolen car. The man who's stolen the car has also taken an eleven year-old girl.

And she's still missing. Sergeant Flea Marley has heard about the car-jacker. He's done it before, she tells Caffery. Twice. Only previously he's let the girls go.

A day later the car is found. Inside, there's a letter: "It's started". And Caffery knows that soon the jacker will choose another random car, the only important thing being the girl in the back seat. Caffery's a good and instinctive cop but this time the jacker seems to be ahead of him - every step of the way....

    "A Well Constructed Plot"

This is one of the best detective stories I have read (or heard!). It was well-read and the plot was gripping - couldn't put it down. I have pre-selected two more Mo Hayder books for next month. Admittedly the ending was a little 'Hollywood', but I didn't mind as it was so well constructed and I enjoyed the twists in the plot.

    "Gone....but not forgotten"

I had previously read all of Mo Hayder's earlier books. ('Birdman' and 'Tokyo' are both brilliant.) This was my first audio version of one of her books. Initially I wasn't too keen on the reader's voice but then I thought that this might be because I already had my version of Jack Caffrey and Flea Marley's voices in my head.
The story is excellent and I raced through it. I came to enjoy the narrator's voice and would thoroughly recommend this book. It's one of those stories you can't get out of your head.

A decent story but a ridiculously purple vocal performance. The plot was decent and my wife is a big fan of the author.

    "Atrocious narration kills this thriller."
    What disappointed you about Gone?

This is a good story read by unsuitable narrator. The dialogue and accents are acceptable but the narrator seems to emphasise the wrong part of the sentence. His reading style is irritating to the point of making this book an unbearable listen.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Jack Caffery, well structured character with good intentions and plenty of flaws.

How could the performance have been better?

The narrator's reading style not suitable for this type of story.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Disappointment. Having read all the Jack Caffery books I think Gone and Skin are the weakest in the series. Gone has a suspenseful plot line but the Flea Marley character is tedious. She argues with everybody, she comes across as a loose canon hell bent on taking ridiculous risks to further the investigation but never reveals her plans to anyone.

    Any additional comments?

If you are still inclined to read Gone buy the print version!

What did you like most about Gone?

Well plotted, not so gory that you think the author is trying too hard.

    Any additional comments?

The main police characters , though flawed, are believable. The story line not too sensational as to be unbelievable. A good all-round read.

"Not as good as previous books by the same author"

I really enjoyed the two earlier books I read by this author, but this one is not to the same standard. The ending, in particular, was disappointing - especially after the gritty realism of the earlier books - and descriptions are often repetitive (many faces are 'ashen', for example). The narrator, too, as other reviewers have pointed out, is distracting, and more suited to children's books than to an adult thriller. I still recommend the earlier books, though - I thought they were excellent!

    "Excellent"

Hanging Hill was the first of Mo Hayders books that I experienced so I decided to try some other titles including Gone, which I thought was first rate. My only criticism is that I have noticed that not all Mo Hayder titles are narrated by the same author, which is a shame as I find my images of the characters link to the voice of the narrator (in this case, Andrew Wincott) and it would be an improvement to always hear Inspector Caffrey (for example) keeping the same voice in all the books. However, the plot was superb... I couldnt wait to keep going although I didnt want the book to end.

    "Frightening"

Dont read this if you are claustrophobic or afraid of the dark. It's quite depressing and a bit far fetched in places but what else do you expect from this author. I'm glad I read the first Jack Caffrey novels though. It meant I knew all about his brother which the story keeps referring to. Good listen although I personally found the narration a bit annoying.

"Winner of Edgar Award for 2012"

This is my introduction to Mo Hayder.

I have just downloaded a second of her books. Interested? Yes I am.
    The characters are plausable.
The story is interesting and a little scary,

It is a part of a series and the most recent available on Audible.
So perhaps, in my not being familiar with what has gone before I may
be losing something. Keeping that in mind I also figure a story can
    hold its own.

For me though Mo Hayder is good enough to listen to a second of
    her books in the series.

In a way she is setting her own style in letting her characters be
themselves and I do find that interesting. While the series does follow
a main character, the story line and plots explores how people do
respond to and react to others and how this influences what happens next.

No super hero as such, but a team with a team leader is viewed in action.
The ideosyncratic motivations and interactions are followed, and so there
are sub plots. It is these that I expect do develop through the series.

This is one of those rare books that I couldn't put down and had to listen to at the expense of everything else.
Very emotive especially to anyone who has a child. The narrator was great at the different accents.
I like that the romance didn't take over the novel. It's a crime novel first and foremost.
Highly recommend for anyone who enjoys British crime novels
