Publisher's Summary

When Donna Langford receives a very recent photo of her ex-husband in the post, she gets the shock of her life. Because she's just spent 10 years in prison for organising his murder.

When her daughter goes missing, Donna believes there can only be one man responsible and hires Anna Carpenter, a determined young private investigator, to find him.

DI Tom Thorne worked on the Alan Langford case, so when Carpenter brings the photo to him, he refuses to believe that the man whose body was found in a burned-out car 10 years before can still be alive. But when a prison inmate that he and Anna interview is viciously murdered, Thorne starts to understand that Langford is not only alive but ready to get rid of anyone who could threaten his comfortable new life in Spain....

    "Good one"

I really enjoyed this story. It was Thorne at his best, completely into the detecting and neglecting his personal life, which I found quite sad. The story is strong, keeping your interest all the way through to the end. Enjoy.
By the way, don't watch him on TV, you'll be disappointed, it's not this Thorne but an unlikeable made-for-TV version.

    "Tom Thorne"

Mark Billingham never fails to disappoint with a Tom Thorne book. Thorne is a suitably cynical cop, and yet he stands out in what is a very crowded market, and the reason for that has to be Billingham's writing. This one is a sure-fire crowd pleaser with a suitably violent beginning, enough dark, dry humour for anybody (the FBI comment had me snorting out loud - very embarrassing since I was walking along a crowded pavement) and the end is suitably inconclusive. Thorne is coming to the small screen later this year - part of me doesn't want to share him.

    "Back on form.."

Good to see that Mark Billingham is back on form after Rush of Blood which I really didn't enjoy.. this book is sharp, well written and keeps you guessing...it's the sort of book you don't want to put down. Thoroughly recommended!

Took me quite a long time to get into this book but then it kept me interested to the end. The ending a bit predictable but will definitely read more from Mark Billingham.

    "dreadful"

listening to this book was a torture. the narrator was awful, story so far fetched and fake. I almost left it half way and maybe I should have. It was a waste of time for me.

What did you like most about From the Dead?

Another great story with unexpected twists and turns. The first 2 Tom Tnorne novels I listened to were narrated by Phil Glenister and he's superb. The narrator for this novel was the opposite of Glenister's measured and gentle style. It jarred me at first and was so under-engaging I wasn't sure if I'd get to the end. However, I guess he's probably more in character than Glenister's gentle tones.

Compared with the psychopaths in the other 2 novels the characters were more straightforward and therefore less interesting, but there were some great moments of tension.

On the whole it was worth reaching the end, but if I'd got a Glenister narrated version, I think I'd have enjoyed it more.

What did you like best about this story?

    Twists and turns

    "Another great outing for Thorne"

Gillingham has created a real person in Tom Thorne. Not only are the stories good crime drama, but they bring the characters to life. Well worth reading the whole series and I can't wait for the next one!

    "Who?"

Maybe it was just me, but most of the time the name of the main protagonist, 'Thorn', sounded like 'Dawn'. This did not help the narrative flow until I realised it was the narrator's strange accent. (And how did he manage to get it right once every four occurrences?)

And why was it necessary to not pause for even a second at the end of chapters before announcing the next chapter, but then leave a decent pause before beginning to read again? And to read the last line of the book as if 'The End' came before the full stop was weird. Someone explain to him that 'The End' is like a separate chapter.
