Publisher's Summary

Salvation and annihilation meet at one degree. One man's dream of providing clean drinking water for millions, tapped from the polar ice, sparks a conflict of humanity, science, big business, and environmental extremism. But no one can foresee the true danger hidden deep within the ice, an enemy more deadly than any could imagine, and an apocalyptic horror mankind may not survive.

"Karen's a female Michael Crichton. Freezing Point is a terrific read. I highly recommend it." (James Rollins)

"Freezing Point will have your blood running cold"

I picked this book up on the recommendation of James Rollins. He mentioned that he had read this one and really liked it so I thought I'd give it a try.
I was not disappointed. Talk about freezing you to your seat. I couldn't stop listening.
This book has just the right amount of technology, "save our world" issues, and believeable characters, delivering a solid, fast paced, at times gruesome, story line.
With our resources of fresh water dwindling rapidly, could the technology in this book provide a possible solution?
If you like adventure, this is one for you!!!!

    "Freezer Burn"

A short, moderately entertaining thriller, reasonably well narrated. The story doesn't have time to paint too detailed pictures of the characters, and relies abit heavily on " action ". Requires a notable amount of belief suspension, but overall moderately entertaining.

    "The ANTI Michael Crichton"

    DIONNE is the ANTI-CRICHTON

Having enjoyed State of Fear, Jurasic Park and the like I greatly lamented the passing of Michael Crichton. As Karen Dionne was promoted as a "female Michael Crichton", I eagerly took the plunge.

But the writing quality was not engaging, and the science greatly lacking. Crichton had a more than superficial scientific understanding of his material and because of that took a critical view of what passes these days for eco-science. He cared deeply for the real science of the environment and lambasted the ECO-WACKOS, instead pointing us to shun the PC eco-politics in favor of a real understanding of our world.

Dionne, seems not to have this understanding of the material, and falls prey to the PC eco-pseudo-science to a frustrating degree. It also makes many of her story premises unplausible making suspension of disbelief near impossible.

The characters are uninteresting, though she has made them to a degree mundane (in a good way) that they feel "real" like the scientists and businessmen I meet daily (with the exception of the key villains).

    If you miss Crichton....

    Avoid this book!

    "Disappointing"

Although this story starts off with a tremendous bang, it really didn't hold my interest.

I found many of the characters fatuous, self-important and hard to like. The repetition of statistical information was also annoying. I like novels that offer good hard scientific facts, but my memory is fine and I don't need them repeated five times.

The premise of the story was very compelling, but the writing did not measure up for me. Ms. Dionne could have used a competent editor.

    "A bit shocking but good."
What made the experience of listening to Freezing Point the most enjoyable?

A well done complex tale. I learned some things.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Three sittings was enough. I needed the rest.

    Any additional comments?

    I will recommend this book.

    "Skating on Thin Ice"

Of course fantasy thrillers are supposed to be 'on the edge' but they only work where possibility and probability resonate side by side and in this book, the probability element was too thin to make the possibilities work.

That being said, on an easy listen ratio I give it 3, on story line a 2. Good for a long trip where the content holds enough of your attention without interfering with what else you happen to be doing.

    "Fast-paced Science Thriller"

I really enjoyed Freezing Point! It's a fast-paced, scientific eco-thriller that reminds me a lot of Michael Crichton. Strong writing, believable characters and a great plot that kept me wanting to know what would happen next.

    "Great Read!"

If you liked Michael Crichton when he was at his best, combining scientific scenarios and a powerful plot you'll enjoy this book. The story is fast-paced and well read by Mark Boyett. I am looking forward to Karen Dionne's second novel.

    ""meh!""

The story was a little too far-fetched to be believable and there were far too many serendipitous coincidences for my taste. Use your credits elsewhere unless you are looking for pure mind-candy that you don't really have to focus on.
