Publisher's Summary

Josh and Emily Flanagan return to their hometown in upper Michigan to open a funky antique shop, which they hope will provide a sane and comfortable retirement. Both have pursued successful careers in Manhattan: she as an appraiser of antiques for an auction house, and he as an insurance adjuster in the field of art and antiques.

A man seeking to purchase an antique doll for his ailing grandchild opens up a Pandora's Box of hidden family secrets and intrigue that results in bitter hostility and murder. Josh and Emily, through brilliant deduction and imaginative enterprise, discover the clues that lead to the solution that lies at the heart of this mystery. As characters they are similar in conception to the witty bantering loving couple, Nick and Nora Charles of the famed Thin Man series created by the mystery writer Dashiell Hammett.

The idyllic town of Lakeside Falls, with it's superb skiing slopes in winter and courful country in summer, renowned for the cherry orchards, is a prime target for tourists and now the retirement home of the Flanagans, returned after years working away in the Big City. He, Josh, had been an insurance investigator and old habits die hard: he still pokes his nose Into anything considered a mystery - and somstimes gets it broken.
When a customer arrives in their curiosity antique shop looking for a very specific old doll for his sick granddaughter, dollar signs dangle in front of their eyes - the promise of money the Flanagans badly need. But, a!though the doll is found, Josh is not happy with the way it was acquired. Then the previous owner dies unexpectedly: of course there must be foul play!
This is a delightfully twisted tale of who if anyone, dispatched the much loved e!derly matriarch. But the real joy comes from the numerous characters who live in Lakeside Falls and in particular the repartee between Josh and his vibrant wife, Emily. If you enjoy puns and quick fire humerous dialogue you are in for a terrific treat.
It would be so easy to lose much of this wordplay fun, which often relies on similarity of sound but differences of meaning, when transferring the text from page to audio, but Kevin Scollin does a magnificent job. His voice is pleasant, easy to hear. His character voices are easy to distinguish in conversation. And above all he allows the punning and repartee to shine out.
This is a book of luxurious enjoyment for anyone who loves a good mystery, or comedy, or sparkling good characterisation. It has all three and much more. I was extremely fortunate in receiving a complementary copy of Mr.Adler's book , via Audiobook Boom, from the author, narrator or publisher, in exchange for an honest review. This I have given. I wish only that I had been better able to convey it's wonxerful writing and fantastic fun. Highly recommended.

    "The Antique Who Expired."
If you could sum up Flanagan's Dolls in three words, what would they be?

    Mystery, Puns, Clean.

Mystery--this is a good murder mystery. The ending is a surprise but it was foreshadowed. It is a product of good writing rather than gimmick.

Pun--the main character is a retired insurance claims investigator that now owns an antique shop with his wife. He is very fond of puns.

Clean--this was a refreshingly clean book which is sometimes hard to find in this genre.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

This book is very well written. The suspense and pacing are just right. You experience the mystery along with the main character. No clues are held back. You have the same ones that he has. It is a classic mystery that breaks stereo-types.

    Which scene was your favorite?

Hmmm...There are lots of good scenes in this book. Seeing how Josh reacts when Emily gives the antique doll to the sick little girl is both a touching and hilarious scene. Josh taking his dog to visit the rival antique dealer's store also makes for a memorable scene. The banter between Josh and Emily and Josh and the Sheriff Sam is humorous and entertaining. This is a fun, entertaining and suspenseful book.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Yes, this is a fun mystery. It does make you want to solve the crime. While it is funny, the overriding emotion is wanting to figure out 'who done it' and how. The narrator has a voice that is perfect for this book and does an excellent job narrating. Each character has an individual voice and the narrator switches seamlessly between them. He delivers the puns so that they are funny.

    Any additional comments?

I received this book for free from the author, narrator or publisher in exchange for an honest review. This is a great book and I would definitely listen to it again.

"An interesting mystery with great characters"

This was a really fun book. I've listened to three books by Warren Adler, and I think this one is my favorite so far. I absolutely loved the marriage relationship of the Flanagans. They are so cute and funny together. The whole book is filled with humour, as many of the characters enjoy making puns. The mystery itself is good and has an interesting medical twist. I listened to the Audible audio version of the book narrated by Kevin Scollin. I enjoyed the narration and thought the voice went really well with the main character, and he didn't do "campy" female voices, which I appreciated. I don't know if this book is part of a series or not, but I would be really interested to read about more adventures of the Flanagans.

    "Different Premise"

The general concept of this book was interesting. It was unusual, which was nice. The way everything was connected was done well, and tied up nicely.

I love a good pun, but there were so many that it kind of distracted from the story for me.

The narrator was good. The voicing didn't vary a lot, but it was easy to distinguish characters.

    "Another Adler Hit"

As usual, Warren Adler has developed a unique plot and presented it with humor and by creating interesting characters for us to live with as the plot develops. As the book went on the reader can't help but to enjoy these characters and their personalities. As a collector of antiques, this story was particularly interesting to me.

    "A Wonderful Mystery! Very Entertaining!"

I absolutely loved the humor and the mystery in this book. Very well written, kept me entertained from start to finish. The Flanagan's give customer service to the fullest by not being dirty in their dealings like their competitors and by truly caring about their clients. Narration was AMAZING! Kevin Scollin brought Mr. Flanagan's character (as well as the others) to life and that much more entertaining. I will not only be recommending this book to family and friends but I will be listening to it again!

    "Antique dealers with heart?"

Joshua Flanagan and his wife left Manhattan to open an antiques store in their small hometown of Lakeside. As an ex-insurance investigator, Josh has good instincts for anything hinky, and all of his instincts are screaming at him after he goes to see a lady about a valuable antique doll. When she suddenly sickens and dies a few days later, he's convinced she was murdered. Now, can he convince his friend and investigative rival, the local sheriff, of the fact?

By the time I finished this book, I felt I knew Josh and his wife personally. Despite being in a business that has a bit of a reputation for sharp dealings, they really care about people and care about doing the right thing. All of Adler's characters were well-realized, and that made it a really enjoyable read.

Only complaint--I figured out the killer pretty early on. Still, I enjoyed the ride.

    "ENJOYABLE, REFRESHING AND FUN!!"

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The relationship between the Flanagans is refreshing and easy to love. The characters and story line are very well written and developed. Each character adds to the mystery making the book all that much more enjoyable. I was a fan of Warren Adler already but after listening to this book, I am a bigger fan than before.

Kevin Scollin is simply amazing with his narration of this story. He brings each character and the story to life better than if I was to read it for myself. He has a very pleasant tone to listen to, along with great pace and inflection.

    "Absolutely Fantastic Mystery"
    Any additional comments?

This book was pure mystery fun. Adler weaves a tale that is endlessly entertaining to follow and very hard to predict. However, it was narrator Kevin Scollin who really brought this story to life. I fell in love with these characters because of how much personality/nuance/specificity that was in the voice acting. An absolutely flawless performance that kept me hooked until the last moment. I'd recommend this book to anyone; this book is *just right* for mystery lovers!

Where does Flanagan's Dolls rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

It was a pleasant, refreshing, yet thrilling listen. I became entrenched in the story and loved the narration. It was beyond words, an audible masterpiece.

    Any additional comments?

The narrator's voice was strong, impactful, and steady. It drew me into the story and kept me guessing till the end.

    "Refreshing"

I received this book free with the understanding that I would leave an honest review.
I enjoyed this fun mystery. It was an easy listen. Kevin Scollin did a great job of narration. The husband in the story Josh was always using puns. It is one thing to read them but I thought Kevin did a great job of delivering them. Josh's fun with words did get to me a bit but I understand that this was part of the character. His loving wife Emily must be a saint to deal with them. I did love the way Adher wrote the relationship between Josh and Emily. It is very refreshing to read a loving, fun marriage relationship. The Flanagan's are a fun couple one that my husband and I would enjoy hanging out with.
