Murdering his way through a string of women in the swamps of Baton Rouge, Jon Walker made a notorious name for himself as the Bayou Butcher. But his reign of terror ended when US Marshal Anthony Ross and District Attorney Lauren Chandler put the crazed killer away for multiple lifetimes...and discovered they shared a passion for more than just justice.
Five years later, after duty has driven Lauren and Anthony apart, the Butcher breaks out of prison, ready to get back to his deadly business - beginning with Lauren. But he's not the only man who's back in Lauren's life: Anthony is heading up the manhunt...and hoping to reclaim the woman he never stopped loving.
With bodies falling and death closing in, there's nothing Anthony won't do to keep Lauren safe in his arms - and keep her blood off the Butcher's hands.

"Over-the-top, barely plausible romance & murder my"
I knew I was going to have a problem when, shortly after the story started, the h stupidly asked “is someone there” when someone calls her name in her house that’s supposed to be empty and where she lives alone. Then she, of course, moves to investigate the sound with a kitchen tool. This story was slow to me with the exception of maybe the last 30 minutes, which was the best part of the book but not worth buying. And my interest was peaked somewhat about 3 hours into the story but not maintained until the last part.
There’s much more emphasis on the murder-mystery part of the story and not the romance aspect. The kidnapping sequence ended in an unrealistic way, though the author tried to explain the kidnapper’s thinking. A statement by one of the federal agents investigating the kidnapping supports the unlikely outcome of the kidnapping. It was a stretch and detracted from me enjoying the story. And I hated the over-the-top romantic declarations of the H. The “she’s so beautiful I hurt” statement is too extreme to be appealing. It detracts from the story and the relationship instead of adding depth or connection. Additionally, he continually professed stuff like: I can’t breathe w/o you; I can’t live w/o you; I want you 24/7. She attempts to write desire, but it’s at such an extreme, primarily from the H, that it’s frightening and sort of ugly. He even admits that he’s concerned he’s obsessed with her, the h. He said that what he feels for her is “dark.” I love romances, and very much enjoy the head-over-heels type, but it needs to seem like it could happen here on earth, without intoxicants or mental deficiencies to make it happen. The only good part is that the murderer was not known until the end. But some of the machinations to hide the murderer weren’t impossible but seriously unlikely. And how the murderer knew some of the things he knew were never explained and, therefore, left questionable and hard-to-believe.
Finally, on the narrator, I didn’t like the southern twang the narrator often used for the murderer. Plus, essentially all of the male characters sounded too alike. I think I’m done with this author. It wasn’t bad, but it’s also not worth trying again.
Hmm.. 309 four and five star reviews and 24 one and two stars? I guess we know who wins on deciding what's a good book and what isn't.
Personally, I loved this book and I'm starting the next one when I finish this review.
I really liked Anthony and Lauren, great twosome.
Liked Cadence and Kyle too. Their's is the book I'm reading next.
Hate, hate, hated the Butcher. And I was surprised at the twist in the book after I started it.
As far as the sex goes? If some of those who complain about it did a little bit of research they would have know there was sex in this series. Makes me wonder why they didn't check a little harder. When I look at a book to buy I do a word search for the word "sex" in the book and that makes my decision. If there's no sex in it I don't buy the book. It's that simple. AND I wish people would stop exaggerating about how much sex there is. That's really unfair to the author and other readers. I think I remember 3 times they had sex. That really isn't a lot. Just sayin'
As for the narrator: Ms. Beresford did a great job. All the men sounded like men and her southern accent was very good. What I really liked were her emotions. She whispered, yelled, laughed. Just wonderful.
"Cynthia Eden is a genius"
One of my favorite authors. Amazing plot, amazing characters, and amazing sensuality. Highly recommend and love the narration.
i loved it! There were several twists and turns so the ending was a surprise!
This was a wonderful book with several different twists and turns that have you biting your nails. And just when you think it's one person it ends up being another.
I definitely recommend this book.
"It was okay."
Yes, but I think I will read the next one and see if it was the narration or the story that bugged me. There were many places in the story line that I felt had giant, neon signs pointing out the next victim or plot point. I did like the suspense elements and the Bayou location. I found the bad guy appropriately creepy and unlike some of the other listeners, I thought the romance was well done.
Maybe. I have listened to narrators that I disliked MUCH more than I disliked Ms. Breseford. There was just something about her reading that prevented me from enjoying this book. The male voice was too aggressive, some of the southern accents didn't make sense, and some characters came across as really angry/hysterical for no reason.
Yes, but just barely. I had to keep after myself to finish this one.
"Most unenjoyable book!"
The narration - terrible, painful and unbelievable!
Good storyline but the sex scenes are repetitive and gratuitous!
Anyone who'd make it credible!
"You will be dumber for listening to this dribble"
a better writer who did not make wishy washy characters
The murder story good. The horrible flip flop and inconsistency of characters SUCKED
She was very passionate, a good story teller
Every love scene
