When Jesse McDermitt retires from the Marine Corps at age 37, he has no idea what he will do for the rest of his life. He only knows he doesn't want to spend the coming winter anywhere cold. His greatest skill is killing people from up to a mile away, and he knows there aren't many job opportunities in the civilian world for that. However, he also knows his way around boats and has an old friend living free and easy in the Florida Keys. Being an experienced diver and angler, he immediately heads south toward Key West and the end of the road.
With a single comment, a waitress in a waterfront restaurant in north Key Largo shakes loose a long dormant dream and Jesse runs with it. With the help of friends, new and old, he buys just the right boat to live on and soon starts a part time charter business. Danger lurks in the sleepy little town of Marathon, in the middle of the Florida Keys, as well as in the swamps of the Everglades. But danger doesn't expect to run into a man like Jesse. A man who will not only respond swiftly in facing it, but with a vengeance unexpected.

"Excellent action thriller with great narration."
Fallen Out is Book 1 of the Caribbean Adventure series. At 5 hours it is short for a novel but the other novels in the series are longer. The suspense is rather light. The 37 year old protagonist, Jesse McDermitt, recently retired from a career in the US Marines after which he bought a luxury boat and takes out fishing and other excursions from his dock in the Florida Keys. He manages to run across lots of bad guys as well as beautiful and friendly women. Nick Sullivan narrates wonderfully. This novel is nice, light listening.
"Mary Sue alert"
Beginning of the story was interesting. However, the main character developed into the type who is smarter, tougher, rich, and always gets the girl... or girls.
He is very similar in premise to Dirk Pitt, Reacher, Bond, etc...
I prefer more normal characters who aren't so over the top.
How many novel series do we need with an ex special forces guy who is rich, kicks everyone's butt, and has flocks of swooning women?
"Different Pace and Rythm"
This is a linear story that starts with the retirement of Jesse McDermitt from the military and follows his life forward. There are no flashbacks and no parallel stories happening at the same time that all of a sudden come together at the end. The book is simply the story of Jesse's life after the military. There is some action but that is not the focus of the book, more like a bit of adventure in Jesse's life. It is interesting to learn a bit about charter boats, the keys and life in the keys. The characters are likable. If you are looking for an interesting and different story location this is worth the credit this is for you. If you thrive on high action (Thor, Child, Flynn) this is not the book for you.
"Loved the narration"
The book was well-produced and high quality. The narration was excellent. I enjoyed it.
"Loved it! Two thumbs up!"
Great audio book!
Retired Sergeant of the Marines Jesse McDermitt is a well defined character... Retiring from the Marines and moving to the Florida Keys, Jesse has time on his hands to create his second act in his life. Up front, you get to know him and his personality which helps get this book off on the right foot. Along the way, his friends (old and new) are introduced with distinct separate personalities that are easy to follow. Well defined characters through out the book, you feel you are right there in the circle with them.
The story is action packed and weaves it's way thru the story to came back around complimenting the second half of the book very well. A well written story!
The narrator was perfect for the story. Well understood and easy to follow.
Very enjoyable, exciting audio book leaving you looking for the next book in the series! Well worth listening to! I loved it!
Keep writing Wayne! You have a new reader (listener)! :)
"Like a Visit with the Locals in Key West"
I'll listen to this book again when its turn comes up. It's like taking a vacation.
Differentn characters, plot and exact locale but it reminds me of the Mac Travis Seriex by Stephen Becker
Looking foward to listening to more in the series.
A fantastic action novel with excellent narration by Nick Sullivan. A truly great series of books.
"great audio, sets up intestine series."
by itself, this story is only ok. but it has potential to be an interesting series.
"Read and Listen to"
Excellent read and listen. Moved seamlessly between written and spoken word. Just when you thought it was done there was another twist.
"John D. and Travis would approve"
Obviously the author was/is a fan of John D. MacDonald and Travis McGee... as are millions of us. Since John D has passed away there will be no more Travis adventures so I welcome this series.
Rather than compare the two characters and stories, I prefer to simply enjoy Jesse and his adventures. .... on to #2.
