Summary

A walk in the woods takes a sinister turn for police chief Jeffrey Tolliver and medical examiner Sara Linton when they stumble across the body of a young girl. Incarcerated in the ground, all the initial evidence indicates that she has, quite literally, been scared to death.

But as Sara embarks on the autopsy, something even more horrifying comes to light. Something which shocks even Sara. Detective Lena Adams, talented but increasingly troubled, is called in from vacation to help with the investigation – and the trail soon leads to the neighbouring county, an isolated community, and a terrible secret…

Francie Swift has starred in New York theatre productions for over ten years with highlights including work with playwrights Edward Albee and Richard Greenberg. Her film and television work includes The Scarlet Letter, Scent of a Woman, Two Weeks Notice and multiple roles on the Law and Order series.

abridged version

wish there was an unabridged version of this story. although I got the story, i did feel like I was missing out on a lot of the Sarah/Jeffrey/Lena saga.

A good listen but not my favourite

Other novels by Karen Slaughter I have read or listened to have been more gripping. Still worth its time as I love the continued story of the main Characters.

As always gripping and intense. I enjoyed it very much but wasn't keen on the ending. i wish this book was much longer.

im a big fan of karin slaughter

this was my first ever audio book. so i chose an author i know. the voice was very very american and for the first couple of chapters it did grate on me but after that i stopped noticing so much. i am a gardener and was getting fed up with having music on all day so i am now hooked onto my audio books instead. i also think it made me remember jackanory of my childhood. anyway fab book as always from karin thrilling to the end....next one please!

Abridged version - felt cheated

Unfortunately this book wasn't available unabridged so had to purchase the abridged version or miss a book. Having not read an abridged book before, I was disappointed, it felt like reading a book that had pages missing. Karin is very good at all the little sub plots and tentacles that pull the whole story together and this book was missing all that. Won't do abridged again

Abridged

I love Karin slaughters books but the abridged version of this and the next in series are all that’s available in audio and takes so much away from the story ☹️

abridged but for good reason

I was annoyed to find out you can only get an abridged version of this book. But then I bought the book and realised why it was abridged.
Previous reviews said it didn't make any sense abridged. Well I can tell you that the entire book made little sense. It was very lazy writing, with references only half made or dropped half way through. Sometimes she makes a reference to something out of nowhere and I would often look back and try and find out what she night be referring to.
The bits the audio version missed were actually very boring and written so randomly that I would advice if, like me, you feel you have to see things through to the end, stick to the audio. Fingers crossed the next in the series is better than the last two books.
Fair play to the narrator, she had a difficult task.

Abridged - avoid!!

Having previously bought the other books in this series as kindle and audible versions so I can mix and match depending on what I’m doing, I didn’t realise this is an abridged version. Awful, too short and clearly so much missing 😡
