Returning to New York City, Jason finds himself entangled in a murderous conspiracy only he can see and only he can stop - a plot that bizarrely links his private passions to the turmoil of a world at war.
Hunted by terrorists and by the police, Jason has only hours to unravel an ex-lover's lies and face the unbearable truth: In order to prevent a savage attack on his country, he's going to have to risk his decency, his sanity, and his life.

"First Andrew Klavan Book Was a Hit for Me"
After reading the only other customer review on this book, I was a little hesitant to purchase, but went ahead, taking care not to order any more until I had a chance to listen to this one. I have now added all Andrew Klavan's books to my "Next Listens". The story was very well developed, with plenty of surprises, and a very good ending. The primary character was certainly complex, human, and a hero while struggling with doing right in this permissive age. I am certain that some people will be turned off by the prospect of being inside a Christian man's head, but I found it to be a very fresh approach. It allowed the author to add another layer of complexity to the character, who lacked the cynicism of most modern characters yet was hardly an angel. I also enjoyed the lack of mealy-mouthed political correctness that has invaded so much modern writing. This fiction story seemed honest and without guile. I also thought the sometimes rough language was necessary for realism. It would have been artificial without it.
"Empire of Lies"
First of Andrew Klavan books I've read. Won't be the last.
I found him first on PJTV, LOVED him ever since.
I don't want to spoil anything for anyone who hasn't read/listened, but I would say the last hour were most memorable.
Probably when Jason sat down with the actor Patrick at the bar (near the end of the book).
See most memorable moments.
I liked (for the most part) how Klavan read his own book. The story takes shape nicely and proceeds logically. Tensions mount and there are a couple of pretty exciting and descriptive action scenes. The climax and denouement, however, were a bit too abrupt and left me wondering, "Is that all?" There were, in my mind, a ton of unanswered questions and situations. Too bad. It's tough to recommend this book because of loose ends.
"Klavan can do better"
I have enjoyed many of Andrew Klaven's past books because of the conversational tone he takes in his stories. I always like to hear his "quirky" way of thinking. This book, however, did not live up to my expectations. It was way too wordy and the parts that were supposed to be exciting and fast paced just dragged on and on and left you not really caring about what finally happened. The end of the book left many unanswered questions and I think he was just setting us up for the sequel.
I was first introduced to this book on the Glenn Beck program. I was intrigued by the fact that the main character was supposed to be a Christian unravelling "evil". I didn't get very far into the book. Turns out it is rated "R" for language. I'm sorry, but as a Christian, I just couldn't stomach the hero spouting the "f" word so frequently. I gave up in chapter 7. This may be an excellent book. I was disappointed that the author felt it necessary to use such raw language. Had it been his enemies, I probably could have stuck it out. But Christians just don't talk like that.
Despite the synopsis, which made the book sound exciting and action-packed, it was boring to listen to. I only made it a little past halfway before giving up. If you want a good story written by Klavan, read True Crime or Don't Say A Word, even Hunting Down Amanda was pretty good. Unfortunately, you can't get those on audio, but they're a great read. However, Klavan has a remarkable voice for audiobooks. His voice is pleasing to listen to, but the story lacked. I found myself wanting a lot more action and intensity, but couldn't hang in there until the end.
