What the Critics Say

"In his lengthy career, veteran novelist Peter Lovesey has supplied the most diverting (and elegantly written) crime fiction." (Good Book Guide)

"Diamond is a wonderfully rounded character whose lines are witty and whose observations about people's characters and motives are brilliantly insightful. Vintage Diamond mystery, spiced by his comic encounters with his supervisor: a must for devotees of character-driven British crime fiction." (Booklist)

    "Disappointed"

I have enjoyed reading these books ,set in Bath. Unfortunately the actor has managed to make all the parts sound very similar. The local police officers in the different locations, with same slow elderly sounding West Country burr. The other parts difficult to discern too. It was like listening to Hot Fuzz and took away my usual enjoyment of these books.

    "Georgy Girl"

Diamond's worse nightmare could be working as an investigative team with his boss Georgina. When it happens they are sent to review the conduct of a police officer in West Sussex accused of misconduct. Diamond has to manipulate his boss, tiptoe around the hostile local force and try to clean the suspended officer whom he knows from a previous investigation involving the two police forces.

Sticky, tricky and difficult not to be on his patch but also because the picture is bigger than it first appears. Diamond has to show he is right to expand his investigation while trying to expose a much bigger racket; no easy task but Diamond is as tenacious as a bulldog.

I found it enjoyable to see Diamond off his usual patch and working without a buffer between him and Georgina.

"Another great story from Peter Lovesey."

I was captivated from start to finish. This excellent book is well recommended . The narration by Michael Tutor Barnes was faultless and was the icing on the cake. A must listen.

    "Really enjoyable"

Read this far too quickly - but it is really gripping. Would highly recommend. And excellently read - as ever - by Michael Tudor Barnes - think he must be one of the best narrators going.

    Loved it!!!

"Quite enjoyable, if a bit long winded."

This is my first Superintendent Peter Diamond story. I enjoyed it. The storyline is interesting and the characters are engaging and well fleshed out by the author. It is not a work of 'literature' by any stretch of the imagination (in the sense that works by Mankell, Herron and Rankin transcend the genre) but I found myself thinking I wouldn't mind listening to another Peter Lovesey story in due course.

    "Good old fashioned whodunit"
What did you like most about Down Among the Dead Men?

It flows nicely and is fun.

What other book might you compare Down Among the Dead Men to, and why?

Strangely enough any Agatha Christie. But don't be put off. It is up to date with lots of characters and intrigue.

What does Michael Tudor Barnes bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

Humour. His narration is so skillful and you cannot help but feel the relationships or not!

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

    Peter Diamond, today's Hercule Poirot.

    "Ealing comedy meets detective fiction"
Would you try another book written by Peter Lovesey or narrated by Michael Tudor Barnes?

I had very mixed reactions to this book. The story was fun, with a good ending and some likeable characters. Some of the dialogue, especially between the schoolgirls, was toe- curlingly awful, and the narrator made all of the women, without exception, sound like bad female impersonators. so, yes to another book by Peter Lovesey (although it would probably have to be a Daily Deal to tempt me), but a big fat no to anything narrated by Michael Tudor Barnes.

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

The story was lively and fun, and I didn't guess "whodunnit" until the crime was solved. However, most of the relationships between the various police officers were rather predictable, and the schoolgirls were far too "St. Trinians" for my taste.

Who might you have cast as narrator instead of Michael Tudor Barnes?

    Anyone.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Amusement, tinged with disappointment at the narration, which probably wasn't helped by some stilted dialogue.

    Any additional comments?

I am a little surprised at myself, but I actually found some of the female voices offensive, it felt as if I was watching an unpleasant drag act.
