Summary

Two years have passed since the dramatic destruction of Count Dracula. And Jonathan Harker has settled down to a quiet life as a junior partner in a law firm. But his reputation is about to catch up with him.

As word of his abilities spreads, clients are turning to him for help with problems which appear to have an involvement in the supernatural. His first case takes him to Cornwall, where the Haywood family are worried about the imminent marriage of their daughter, Flora, to the elusive Sir Owen Velland.

Flora had been engaged for two years to the amiable Doctor Goodwin, before suddenly breaking off the relationship in favour of Sir Owen. Yet Sir Owen had been recently widowed under very suspicious circumstances and rumours are circulating in the small Cornish town that his unnatural powers and abilities may have some involvement with devil worship.

Are these rumours just idle gossip? Or is there a dark truth behind what people are saying? Can Harker use his knowledge of unusual and the occult to befriend Sir Owen and discover his secrets? Or has he come up against an opponent even deadlier than Dracula himself?

Devil May Care sees the return of Jonathan Harker, the hero of Bram Stoker's classic Dracula, in a chilling new historical mystery series. Tony Evans is a full-time writer. His other publications include the Hester Lynton Mystery series and adaptations of classic novels [for the “Real Reads” series]. He lives with his wife in the Yorkshire Dales.

A good start to a new series.

If you could sum up Devil May Care in three words, what would they be?

Great Victorian Mystery

What was one of the most memorable moments of Devil May Care?

The hero and villain's first confrontation.

Which character – as performed by Peter Noble – was your favourite?

The hero, Jonathan Harker, although his wife, Mina comes a close second.

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

I hate it when books are turned into films, so this question would be irrelivant.

Any additional comments?

I really liked the idea for this book, and I understand it's to be the first in a series. It's great to find a story that concentrates on a mystery element rather than lots of grizzly detail and graphic violence, and the fact that it was set in Victorian England was so much the better. It lent a good atmosphere to the story. The book is perhaps a little short. I felt there were some scenes the Author could have done more with. He could have showed us what happened instead of merely telling us. It would have helped to increase the suspense and a bit more emotion wouldn't have hurt, but all in all, a good book and I'm looking forward to reading more of this series.

Not a full size novel

I did enjoy the book and the characters in it with the concept that Dracula was based on real events and thus Harker is the go-to lawyer where something weird has occurred.

However, at only 4 hours, it’s very short and I may not have bought it had I realised.

would love to hear more from this author

Great story and one I think could really be developed. I love the idea of Jonathan and Mina Harker as occult investigators. I really enjoyed this story.

As Wooden as ...

... Keanu Reeves in Bram Stoker's Dracula.

Hard to get passed first conversation between Harker and Mina.

Devil May Care ...

but I rather doubt it. Mediocre at best, the author seems to be at such great pains to reproduce the slow, somewhat ponderous tone of Johnathan Harker's journal in the original that things like pace, tension and atmosphere have been completely forgotten, and what we're left with is a fairly dull, unexciting little tale without much point or merit. And even though the characters (the main ones at least) were created by Bram Stoker, and therefore should have been a gift, handed to the author on a plate, Tony Evans has managed to leech all the personality out of them and render them flat and bloodless (sic). When every character - particularly the female ones - is described as 'unique' 'remarkable' and 'exceptional' in the end no-one comes to feel anything other than ordinary.

The biggest trial for me has to be the extraordinarily eccentric style of narration, with strange, random phrasing and emphases on all the wrong words, it begins to sound a bit like Jeff Goldblum doing one of his beer commercials ... just not as entertaining ...

I didn't absolutely HATE "Devil May Care", but I'm very glad I didn't pay for it.

I hope the devil did care because the author didn’

really hoped I would like this book , Jonathan and Mina Harker are two potentially great characters for a good author to flesh out, a darker and changed J & M after the events of Dracula could really work ,we don’t get that we get a twee little story cobbled together badly . The author doesn’t seem to have actually read Dracula because the character’s of J &M are completely lacking in characterisation. For a book just over 3 hours long inI nodded of twice . The story is predictable, the villain forgettable quite like how the Harkers managed to forget they had a son throughout the whole story. Quincey is mentioned but as an adult . The story starts with J & M on a train to Cornwall while Jonathan in excruciating detail tell's us how they came to be on the train and never is Quincy mentioned , who’s caring for him ? Where is he ? Jonathan doesn’t seem to know or care .The biggest crime of all is that the author has actually made Van Helsing’s English make sense now as anyone who’s actually read Dracula knows Van Helsing’s “ English “ would strip the enamel of your teeth if you didn’t die of boredom first . So there it is a terrible book that really tries to hard to sound quaint and Victorian but just end’s up sounding boring and long winded. AVOID
