Summary
The third installment in the best-selling DCI Daley series, packed with accurate police procedure and gritty, dark humour. The best of Scottish crime.
When a senior Edinburgh civil servant spectacularly takes his own life in Kinloch harbour, DCI Jim Daley comes face to face with the murky world of politics. To add to his woes, two local drug dealers lie dead, ritually assassinated. It's clear that dark forces are at work in the town. With his boss under investigation, his marriage hanging on by a thread, and his sidekick, DS Scott, wrestling with his own demons, Daley's world is in meltdown.
When strange lights appear in the sky over Kinloch, it becomes clear that the townsfolk are not the only people at risk. The fate of nations is at stake. Jim Daley must face his worst fears as tragedy strikes. This is not just about a successful investigation; it's about survival.

A great listen.
I got into this series entirely the wrong way by listening to The Relentless Tide first, after this I
noted there were a number of books by the same author and have now listened to the whole series. The stories are really to my taste, mystery, intrigue, with a touch of violence, but the thing that adds to the enjoyment is the portrayal of the characters of Kinloch told with such humour and beautiful descriptions of the area. The narrator David Monteath brings it all to life. I have to say I feel the same way about each of the stories and don't know how I'll manage to find my next favourite listen.

Another great story in the series!
I think this is my favourite of the first 3 in this series. Great story and flawless narration as always by David Monteath.

Sad Songs Say So Much
The third book in the DCI Daley series sees our hero Jim continuing to fight the bad guys and his own personal demons. While doing so he and his fellow police officers and officials are "advised" by the fabulously evocative townfolk of Kinloch. It's one of my absolute favourite parts of the series so far that Meyrick creates this fabulously atmospheric small town in Scotland as a background to his stories.
With David Monteath at the mic you know you're going to get top quality delivery and so we do. It's not as perfect this time because in patches the author over-uses switching between two different scenes to ratchet up the tension. It's a common technique but in this case the switches are very frequent with scant paragraphs between them. There are no pauses or other indicators and so it does require additional attention.
Nonetheless this is a very decent series and the story moved along at a smooth pace, albeit with a slightly darker feel as Daley's sidekick is struggling to recover from his injuries after being shot in the previous book. If I do have a concern about this one and the series going forwards it's whether it's that credible that a small-town cop gets involved in such a level of international intrigue and how Meyrick can follow this up. Looking at the ratings and the reviews already in for the later books it does seem like he has managed it somehow!

Excellent narrator
I enjoyed this book but I found some aspects annoying. I didn't think the main character's domestic situation was dealt with very well, it wasn't believable. It seemed to lack the emotional intensity that would have been present in those circumstances. In particular the decision to take his wife back with her child was badly written and lacked depth.
I found the plot rather predictable and it was obvious who would end up dead and who posed the threat. I don't think this was as good as the previous books but it was still a good book and the narrator was excellent.

Confusing
It was hard to follow the storyline as there was no break between different scenes.

Another thrilling D. C. I. Daley gem.
This is my third D. C. I. Daley thriller, & thriller it was!! A lot of the mysteries & questions raised throughout the first 2 books were answered but a few new ones were raised & left unanswered. I hope therefore there will be another D. C. I. Daley book & soon. I have enjoyed all the characters & even found my self chuckling at some of the outlandish comments made by some of the locals, which can bring some light relief from the very tense edge of the seat situations. David Monteath narrates these stories brilliantly. If you like a good thriller with interesting characters then I would recommend these books.

Lived up to my expectations
Once again, this book has impressed me as much as the previous two books in the series. I will await the fourth book with anticipation and hope it won't be too long a wait.
The narration was as outstanding as ever. The incredible versatility of the reader is a genuine treat which greatly enhances the story. I will go as far as to say that David Monteath is the best narrator I have heard - and I have listened to many, many books!
