Summary

Three Irishmen went to America. One's dead. One's as good as. One is missing....

The missing man is Valentine Teague. Petty criminal, bare-knuckle fighter - and DS Aector McAvoy's brother-in-law. Back home Val's being held responsible for the blood spilt in the snowy woods of upstate New York.

If McAvoy doesn't find out the truth, all hell will break loose, putting his own family in the crossfire. Investigating proves harder than he could have imagined. New York City is a different world, with different rules. Soon he finds himself up against squabbling cops, mafias old and new, and the culmination of a crime 40 years in the making. All McAvoy can do is the right thing. Even if it kills him.

absolute let down

Absoloute rubbish compared to to other 5 books in the series. I had to read it to reach a conclusion to the other 5 books but it's many hours I'll never get back.

Aector goes to New York

Would you consider the audio edition of Cruel Mercy to be better than the print version?

Only listened to the books in the series. Toby Longworth is a brilliant narrator and part of the joy of this series

Have you listened to any of Toby Longworth’s other performances? How does this one compare?

He is a super narrator particularly adept at the wide range of accents required - all are credible.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No

Cruel Mercy

The story was OK. But I didn't like the subject, and it dragged on a bit. I liked his other books.

City of Crime 2017 HULL

How apt to discover a Hull based book and writer in Hull's year of being city of Culture. I have listened to all six books that are currently available in this series and have enjoyed every one. My favourite genre is Tartan Noire and this book gives the best of both worlds as the detectors a highlander. The stories are a bit gruesome at times. The back story of his home life is engaging. The narrator is excellent and covers all accents required very well. I'm looking forward to the next in the series and I think these books would transfer to the screen very well.

Possibly ok if you're not Irish

I found the Irish dimension of some characters to be a bit stereotyped. Final straw for me however was when the island to our east was referred to as "the mainland". I didn't wait around to see if "fog in channel - continent cut off" also appeared!!

Absurb!

The author is in danger of letting his work become silly unbelievable parody. This 6th novel massively disappoints.

Not the best.

Didn't enjoy this one as much as previous Aector McAvoy stories. Based in America & was quite convaluted. But nevertheless will continue with the series.

Don’t believe the nay sayers!!

This is epic, fantastic drama of magnitude. I loved every wierd moment. The phone calls to Pharaoh were dynamite.

Toby does a killer New York dialect, highly highly reccomended

The last sentence of the book sent shivers up and down my spine.

Daring to take Macavoy away from hull was genius. Beautifully researched. Thank you thank you.

Bit too complex for audio

I have loved this series of books but this one was just not hitting the spot. There are a number of different characters and I always struggle with foreign names. I found myself having to rewind and listen to passages again as I just wasn't getting the gist of things. Also, a very different storyline from the previous books which are quite full with regard to day-to-day family life. I have loved all the other books in this series and have just bought the next and can't wait. Maybe it was just me and my inability to follow a complex storyline.
