Summary

On this day of ill omen, plague makes its entrance. Within weeks, swathes of England will be darkened by death's shadow. While panic and suspicion flood the land, a small band of travelers comes together to outrun the breakdown in law and order.

But when one of their number is found hanging from a tree, the chilling discovery confirms that something more sinister than plague is in their midst. And as the runes warn of treachery, it appears no one is quite what they seem, least of all the child rune reader, who mercilessly compels each of her companions to tell their stories. And face the consequences...

Wonderful narrator for a poor narrative

The narrator brings a warm geordie charm and real character and variety to try and bring a drab and pointlessly meandering tale to life.

An excellent book

I purchased this book after reading the reviews and am so pleased that I did. A fascinating tale with interesting characters set against the turmoil of England in the grip of The Plague.David Thorpe's narration was first-rate and added greatly to the enjoyment of the story.

Fabulous - take with you on a long trip

Where does Company of Liars rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

One of the best

What was one of the most memorable moments of Company of Liars?

The twist at the end you just do not expect or even sense coming

What about David Thorpe’s performance did you like?

Very well read

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No - too long for that but over several days its perfect

Any additional comments?

The fear and panic of the Black Death in medieval times is I think we'll captured in this book - tales of the group are fascinating and fun is guessing what they really are, did and their intentions.

An alternative Canterbury tales

The story is like the Canterbury tales, but with modern notions and themes. It did take a while to get into the story, plenty of twists and turns.
Narrator didn’t leave an adequate pause between the last word of a chapter and speaking the chapter number and the chapter title.
Latin pronunciation wasn’t correct
Chanting was also not correct

good book, strange ending

interesting book, really helps you understand what it must have been like living during the time of the black death. I think it's important to understand from the that this is part historical fiction, part fairy tale, which becomes more apparent as you get further in to the book. it is very atmospheric and quite creepy. unlike other reviewers,I felt like it came to life in the last few chapters but the ending was unexpected, seemed hurried and was quite bizarre, otherwise I would have given 4 stars.

A hidden gem of a book, and well performed.

The two slight issues i have with this audiobook are: 1. the accents of locals are all west country, even though it is mostly set in the Midlands, and
2. the ending. I dont like hanging endings and this is a prime example.
other than that it is a book I would not have read, had it not been offered free. I'm very glad I did though. great charatvterisations, a story that moves along well, and very real a sense of time and place.

A very enjoyable listen

I really enjoyed listening to this book; it was something different to the norm but translates to the current day fairly well. Good narration. Interesting characters. Lovely little quirk at the end.

Evil medieval with great style and depth

DFD : Loved the twisting plot brought to life by brilliant narration by David Thorpe. Will lookout for more from the same author.

Really enjoyed this historical journey with wonderful characters. Brilliantly narrated , the gentle north east accent was so enjoyable to listen to. . I didn't want it to finish.
