Publisher's Summary

Buried deep in a ravine in the picturesque Smoky Mountains is a very dark secret. David Hobbs, vacationing with his wife Miriam, inadvertently stumbles upon a small cloth "keepsake" bag and a broken tooth. A human tooth. Miriam begs David to hand the bag and tooth over to park officials, but he ignores his wife's pleas and secretly keeps the "harmless" items. The action opens a doorway that had been closed for nearly a hundred years and unleashes hell on earth - or at least hell in the lives of David and Miriam.

Following the brutal murder of his best friend in Denver, and an aborted attack on his oldest son, David desperately seeks to understand why a mysterious teenage girl has chosen to terrorize him and the males closest to him. To prevent further devastation to his family and end the wanton bloodshed, he returns to the enchanted hills of eastern Tennessee, where a terrible truth awaits discovery... one that forces him to face the consequences for the unpaid sins of his ancestors.

"For when you're at a loss"

I was at a loss when I purchased this book. In brief it's quite good. As the narrator delves farther into the book the more interesting and at times hooking it becomes. The native american characters were definitely my favourites and the storey is quite endearing with the friendships being formed in times of turmoil. I listen/read horror quite often and this certainly has the spook factor if listened to at night. The storey progresses well and as it's set in Tennessee the iconic scenery is painted very well.

    "Cades Cove"

If I was to put 5 books in my favourite this would be in it,this story is a belter right from the word go right until the end, this couple are having a nice break when they discover a keepsake bag that has a nasty spirit attached to it, has the story unfolds it gets very scary and creepy, the family are terrorised by this spirit its just brilliant if you like a good creepy story I recommend this.

    "Just didn't work for me"

While the narrator did a fine job...for a guy with an Australian/New Zealand accent, he wasn't at all convincing as a character from Tennessee. The accent and pronunciation of common, everyday words was just off-putting. And the story was amateurish and shallow. I decided on this book on a recommendation of a friend who had read it. Maybe it translates better in the written format, but it just didn't work for me as an audible offering.

"A new appreciation for good audio performances."
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

    A professional reader.

Would you be willing to try another book from Aiden James? Why or why not?

    Maybe, who's reading?

How could the performance have been better?

How could it not? Not bouncing in and out of American English and British English and accents. Not stopping at the end of a line if it's not the end of a sentence. Performing instead of reading. To name a few.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

    Story was OK

    Any additional comments?

I have read in excess of 500 audio books and I have only stopped reading and put away
2 books that I could not stand. I did not quit on this book only because of my own experiences at Cade's Cove. ( Not of the Supernatural kind )

With the 2 books that I didn't finish the problem was the story itself. With this book I had to fight myself to continue because of the reader. I honestly cringed hundreds of times listening to him.

"The narration was very cut, and paste."

The narrator wasn't too bad, but it seems like maybe they didn't have all their ducks in a row when it comes to the recording. There were times when it seemed like they recorded each side of a dialog separately with obvious differences in recording quality. Sometimes it sounds like the narrator was narrating over the phone. Then there was that bit in chapter 2 I believe it was where the narrator was speaking in his native accent rather than the American one he uses throughout the rest of the audio book. The only thing that actually annoyed me was in chapter 8 I believe it was where they fast forward through part of the chapter. So I guess the tl;dr is that the narrator was pretty good, but the recording quality was shit. The story was really good if not a little cliche at times, but I definitely want to visit Cade's Cove again in subsequent novels.

The performance quality varied. Editing had tonal differences that were noticeably jarring.
Story line would have been better ended without the epilogue. Don't think I will look for a sequel.

    "Good story - pathetic narration"

The story is a good one , but the reader's obvious British accent and pronunciation of some words lends an air of confusion to a story set in the Rockies and the South - in my opinion it's a story better read than listened to.

It was a big mistake using an Australian accent to read a story about a Tennessee native. Totally not convincing dialogue wise. The story definitely was good.

    "the reading"
Would you consider the audio edition of Cades Cove to be better than the print version?

The person reading this was horrible ...I had to go home and read what I had listened to each day

What didn’t you like about Tim Budas’s performance?

He pronounced words incorrectly and just did not have the right feel for the book. I will not get more books with him as the narrator

"Good book, naration could have been better"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

    yes, it was entertaining

What was one of the most memorable moments of Cades Cove?

the song the narrator had to make up

What didn’t you like about Tim Budas’s performance?

choppy reading, breaks where they didn't belong. accent continually changed. That was all pretty annoying. However, in the book an old lady sang and I thought he did a great job of making up a melody.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

    no

    Any additional comments?

audio level changed every once in a while and at one point went in fast forward.

    "Editing of narration was laughable"
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

The narrator appears to have forgotten or missed some key words and went back to put them in. They really stuck out. If you can get past that, then it's ok.

How could the performance have been better?

The performance could have been better if he had practiced a little more. He did a fine job with his voice. He has a pleasing voice and did well with the different characters. But the corrections were way too obvious.

Was Cades Cove worth the listening time?

If you like a scary story that doesn't have all the blood and guts, it was worth the time.

    "Good Story"
Did Tim Budas do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?

Overall narration was good, but his handling of the female characters is a little off. He portrayed David's daughter with a english accent, but did not with any of the other characters. How does a little girl who lives in CO get a english accent when no one else in the family does?

    Any additional comments?

I really enjoyed the overall premise of the book, without giving out any spoilers, the leading up the ending felt a little rushed, and the actual ending left it like there should be a book 2. The book kept me interested, even though the little girl has a english accent, and the wife at times really irritated me with how she was handling the haunting. She just keeps saying do this and it will go away.
