Summary

As Quebec City shivers in the grip of winter, its ancient stone walls cracking in the cold, Chief Inspector Armand Gamache plunges into the strangest case of his celebrated career. A man has been brutally murdered in one of the city’s oldest buildings - a library where the English citizens of Quebec safeguard their history. And the death opens a door into the past, exposing a mystery that has lain dormant for centuries... a mystery Gamache must solve if he’s to catch a present-day killer. Steeped in luscious atmosphere, brimming with the suspense and wit that have earned Louise Penny a massive global following, Bury Your Dead is the most ingenious suspense novel of the year.

Sublime storytelling

This is book 6 of a series, so best not to start here, but as a lover of these wonderful stories this sophisticated triple tales approach had me gripped. I cried, laughed and sighed at each twist and turn. Characters that fill out a little in each book as other facets of them are revealed. The sidekick’s coming of age trajectory. The waspish eccentric poet (an unkind self parody perhaps). The people who are not all good or all bad, but human.
Thoroughly enjoyable - can’t wait for the next one.

Getting to know characters even more.

Really living this series. So worth while reading them in order. Love finding out more and more about the characters. Makes me want to visit Quebec, wish 3 Pines was real.

Three investigations in one book

I've enjoyed all the books so far in this series but this is my favourite.Three intertwined story threads each of them fascinating meant that I listened to this at every possible moment. There is a mix of location and time and a drawing together of past narratives, altogether great value

The best so far

I thought Louise Penny really upped her game even further with this the sixth Inspector Gamache novel. Not just a development of the Three Pines stories but embracing the difficult political and social scene in Quebec City to give a great insight into the still smouldering tensions between the French and English communities. The narrator does a superlative job throughout and is one of the key reasons I'm binge listening this series.

Narration seemed less harsh than previous volume

But the story dragged a bit in the middle. Will still be getting the next one though …..

Amazing.

This series is hands down the best I have ever read. The auditable narration by Adam Simms is also fantastic.

6* book!

This was wonderful. So descriptive, atmospheric, sad and joyful. There are several threads running throughout. Just wonderful! Beautifully written and narrated as usual. I love how much the characters have developed through their cases, experiences and life. On to the next.

Spent most of this book in tears!

Rarely have I been lulled into lives so filled with laughter and joy, and admittedly the occasional murder, only to have the harsh reality of real life invade that world.
Ms. Penny just broke my heart!
But time, and tide, will heal it again.
I still want to live in Three Pines and have Gamache as a neighbour, along with Clara and even Ruth, but I need a breather after this volume, I guess I'm not as strong as I look..... Beautifully crafted Ms. Penny !
