Summary
The next novel featuring Lieutenant Eve Dallas from #1 New York Times bestselling author J.D. Robb!
Sometimes "brotherhood" is just another word for conspiracy...
Dennis Mira just had two unpleasant surprises. First he learned that his cousin Edward was secretly meeting with a real estate agent about their late grandfather's magnificent West Village brownstone, despite the promise they both made to keep it in the family. Then, when he went to the house to confront Edward about it, he got a blunt object to the back of the head.
Luckily Dennis is married to Charlotte Mira, the NYPSD's top profiler and a good friend of Lieutenant Eve Dallas. When the two arrive on the scene, he explains that the last thing he saw was Edward in a chair, bruised and bloody. When he came to, his cousin was gone. With the mess cleaned up and the security disks removed, there's nothing left behind but a few traces for forensics to analyze.
As a former lawyer, judge, and senator, Edward Mira mingled with the elite and crossed paths with criminals, making enemies on a regular basis. Like so many politicians, he also made some very close friends behind closed - and locked - doors. But a badge and a billionaire husband can get you into places others can't go, and Eve intends to shine some light on the dirty deals and dark motives behind the disappearance of a powerful man, the family discord over a multimillion-dollar piece of real estate...and a new case that no one saw coming.

loved the book but hated the audiobook
I would give this no stars if that were possible, the narrator ruined the story for me. Presumably the author approved the narrator but I cannot understand why this would be, she delivers the story in a flat tone. I have all of the J.D. Robb books and decided to try this audio book, I am not new to audio books and currently have around 2 dozen on my Kindle, most of them have been extremely enjoyable, read by professional actors/narrators who enliven the author's work. Sadly I have given up on this book at 24% and just can't bear going back to listen to the rest of the story.

Can't wait for the next murder!
Another good listen. Eve is getting much softer with age and this story had me moved to tears at times.
An engrossing story that makes you want to listen right to the end without stopping.
A really good inclusion of peripheral characters to make a good story come to life and make you feel like you are in the middle of it.
I loved it and can't wait till the next murder comes along.

Great story but needed to be shorter
I really enjoyed the story-very thought provoking. But way way too long. Ideas and long self analysis constantly repeated...ended up fast forwarding lots.
Narrator fine for a story with American characters...but why choose a narrator who can't do an Irish accent with a major chapter being Irish. Her English accent as bad.

Intimacy at its best.
This series of books has just been some of the best I have listened to in a long long time. Apart from the captivating story lines that has me sitting in my car once I get home just to get to the end of a chapter. The idiosyncrasies and interactions between all the characters even Galahad the cat is just brilliant. The lieutenant and her husband Roarke is a very strange relationship, but with Galahad and Summerset it puts it all on an even keel. I would like to say if I may that the chapter between Eve and Dennis Mira is some of the best writing or listening I have possibly ever heard. The intimacy and love that was portrayed in that chapter was heart wrenching. I would like to thank J. D. Robb for the text and especially Susan Erickson for the superb characterisation of each individual is the book. There are so many characters to talk about and they all stand out in their own little way. Thank you J. D. Robb and Audible for bringing this series to us.

Solid
Any additional comments?
This may be book 42 in the series, but it's the first one I've listened to, (or read), and I was working on the theory that you didn't have to read the other 41 to appreciate the story. That was certainly true, it worked perfectly well as a standalone. It was a solid modern detective murder mystery. I didn't quite get the picture that it's set in 2060. There were a few futuristic references; a tube of pepsi, robot maids, glides, but nothing that made me think, "wow, what an imagination". Don't let that detract from the enjoyment, I have another J D Robb to listen to in my Audible library and I would certainly buy more if they are offered as a daily deal. Not sure I'd use a credit to buy one, but a decent, solid listen
