Summary
Ben Aaronovitch has stormed the best-seller list with his superb London crime series - a unique blend of police procedural; loving detail about the greatest character of all, London; and a dash of the supernatural.
A mutilated body in Crawley. Another killer on the loose. The prime suspect is one Robert Weil: an associate of the twisted magician known as the Faceless Man? Or just a common or garden serial killer?
Before PC Peter Grant can get his head round the case, a town planner going under a tube train and a stolen grimoire are adding to his caseload.
So far so London.
But then Peter gets word of something very odd happening in Elephant and Castle, on a housing estate designed by a nutter, built by charlatans, and inhabited by the truly desperate.
Is there a connection?
And if there is, why oh why did it have to be South of the River?
Full of warmth, sly humour and a rich cornucopia of things you never knew about London, Aaronovitch's series has swiftly added Grant's magical London to Rebus' Edinburgh and Morse's Oxford as a destination of choice for those who love their crime with something a little extra.
Read by Kobna Holdbrook-Smith.

Another piece of brilliance
Ben Aaronovitch has worked his mysterious magic again and conjured up another fantastic story. I love the fantasy element to these books because they are set in such ordinary, contemporary, everyday settings that they are thoroughly believable. I can't be the only person to have tried to conjure up a ware light since Peter learned how to do it himself.
I like the way that Peter himself finds it hard to believe he can do these things taught to him by the dapper and ageless Nightingale. I am a little bit in love with Nightingale and would like to learn more of his murky, long-lived, past.
Kobna Holbrook-Smith has the perfect voice to bring Peter to life and it wouldn't sound right without him.

That explains Elephant & Castle....
Another Peter Grant special with sidekick Lesley May and the erudite Thomas Nightingale do further battle with the faceless one - in Elephant & Castle. A bit of magic and a lot of interesting architectural explanation of South London- which is actually quite interesting - yeh... Honest.. Read by the brilliant Kobna Holdbrook Smith!

PC Grant goes South
Would you consider the audio edition of Broken Homes to be better than the print version?
The great advantage of any audio book is that you can be entertained, entranced and enjoying yourself when stuck in traffic. Broken Homes is no exception but in addition the narration stretches the imagination in directions it might not normally go even beyond the Elephant & Castle.
What other book might you compare Broken Homes to, and why?
The whole Peter Grant daga is built on the basis of Newtonian Magic so this one can only be compared with its predecessors. It maintains the high standard of descriptions of London (above ground and below) and its denizens (above ground and below) and their actions (North and South of the Thames)
What does Kobna Holdbrook-Smith bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?
The range of accents and tones is superb
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
The understated romantic tension as PC Grant flirts around the special people that flow through the story.
Any additional comments?
Almost makes me want to spend time in London voluntarily (Almost but not quite - I still need to be paid to be there in real life but I'll pay to hear Kobna and Ben's next installment)

Brilliant fun.
Would you consider the audio edition of Broken Homes to be better than the print version?
I've not read the print version, but I love Kobna Holdbrook-Smith's performance on this book. He gets the character spot on in my opinion.
Any additional comments?
I am really enjoying this series. It's not a serious crime series, it's the real world with a twist of magic brought into it. It is based around magical crimes in London and the issues the characters face in dealing with those magical problems and crimes. I'm about to start the 5th book in the series, hopefully he brings out more soon!

Still good but
Not as strong a story as the previous books, hope the next in the series continues as strongly as 1,2 and 3

Excellent
Kobna reads this brilliantly, seems a very talented actor. Aaronovitch, has written a excellent story full of fairy tale, history, Celtic magic, british history and up to date policing thrown in. I have not enjoyed a book this much, since, reading my first Harry Potter. If ur a bit scared of a book that has magic in it, don't be, you will be missing out not to read it. :))

On the edge of my seat
How is it I've read/listened to these books dozens of times and not written a review. I guess I just start at the beginning and keep going till I fall out of the last book. This time round I have the latest sat waiting for me like the best dessert.
I met Ben the other day for the first time and got my books signed. That was so exciting :)
Anyway, this book, without spoilering it I'll just say the shock of my first read has been followed by me shouting the equivalent of "don't go in there" or "he's behind you " in true panto style throughout. And I'm reliably informed theres more to come.
Ok, that was my review as such, I'm off into the next book.
