Summary

Ben Aaronovitch has stormed the best-seller list with his superb London crime series - a unique blend of police procedural; loving detail about the greatest character of all, London; and a dash of the supernatural.

A mutilated body in Crawley. Another killer on the loose. The prime suspect is one Robert Weil: an associate of the twisted magician known as the Faceless Man? Or just a common or garden serial killer?

Before PC Peter Grant can get his head round the case, a town planner going under a tube train and a stolen grimoire are adding to his caseload.

So far so London.

But then Peter gets word of something very odd happening in Elephant and Castle, on a housing estate designed by a nutter, built by charlatans, and inhabited by the truly desperate.

Is there a connection?

And if there is, why oh why did it have to be South of the River?

Full of warmth, sly humour and a rich cornucopia of things you never knew about London, Aaronovitch's series has swiftly added Grant's magical London to Rebus' Edinburgh and Morse's Oxford as a destination of choice for those who love their crime with something a little extra.

Another winner in this series

I've got completely hooked on this series and book 4 Broken Homes is just as good as the previous ones. This time Peter and Leslie go undercover in an unusual building on a London housing estate. I love the descriptions of not only characters that Peter meets but the areas, you can totally 'see' the story unfold in your mind. The story flows along easily helped by the narrator who totally gets into the story and keeps you listening ages after you meant to switch off. For me it's definitely another winner by a wonderful author.

Enjoyable but a little disappointing!

Would you consider the audio edition of Broken Homes to be better than the print version?

Having loved the first 3 in the series, this was another entertaining book that has some real highlights for the character developments and plot. The problem was not with the overall plot and storyline which was great, but somehow the writing wasn't as gripping as in the earlier books - lacking in suspense and those moments where you’re biting your knuckles thinking just about anything could happen. I do hope things get back on track with book 5! If you loved the first 3 books, it's definitely worth listening to, just not quite at the same high standard as before...

Beautiful

superbly narrated tale In the Peter Grant series. These books just get better and better. Such detailed knowledge of London and the inner workings of the Met. ..It almost makes the police likeable.

Fantastic new world!

Would you listen to Broken Homes again? Why?

I loved the way the story sucked me in straight away, and would be tempted to listen to all the books again before the next release.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Peter Grant is fun, but I have to say that 'The Nightingale' is a fantastic Character! I love his how Old English he comes across.

Have you listened to any of Kobna Holdbrook-Smith’s other performances? How does this one compare?

I love the entire Peter Grant series, Holbrook-Smith has done an amazing Job narrating the series.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

I hated Peter Grant being betrayed by someone he trusts, and values.

Any additional comments?

I cannot wait for the next book in the series, and love the world and stories that Aaronovitch has created. I look forward to hopefully hearing more about The Folly.

Brilliant right up to the end

Another great book in the series. What I really liked was the fact that the author assumes that anyone listening to this has already listened to the other books and understands what is going on with the characters. So, in all a great book, but the end...not that it's a bad ending, it just ends when things take a major turn and now we have to wait to find out what happens...very naughty Mr Aaronovitch or should that be very clever.

Totally Addicted

I am just addicted to listening to these story's at the moment. The cast of characters is getting larger and larger but you know each and every one of them because they are written so well. I know I will definitely be heading back to the first book to start re-listening soon.

There's a twist.

Excellent story, draws you right in. Murder magic and the unexpected, with intrigue till the very end. Very well narrated.
