Summary

Max Shannon is a good cop, one of the best in New York Enforcement. Born with a natural shield that protects him against Psy mental invasions, he knows he has little chance of advancement within the Psy-dominated power structure. The last case he expects to be assigned is that of a murderer targeting a Psy Councillor's closest advisors. And the last woman he expects to compel him in the most sensual of ways is a Psy on the verge of a catastrophic mental fracture....

Sophia Russo is a Justice-Psy, cursed with the ability to retrieve memories from men and women so twisted even veteran cops keep their distance. Appointed as Max's liaison with the Psy, she finds herself fascinated by this human, her frozen heart threatening to thaw with forbidden emotion. But, her mind filled with other people's nightmares, other people's evil, she's standing on the border between sanity and a silken darkness that urges her to take justice into her own hands, to become judge, jury...and executioner.

Back on track

This instalment in the psy-changling world felt like it was back on track for me. I struggled with the last book, finding it a little too unbelievable. The wider story beneath them all is also really starting to intrigue so I'm looking forward to continuing.

As for this story, i enjoyed it, there were still a few bits not explained well enough for me or that feel rushed to get to a particular point, which I often feel with these books, but overall it was a really interesting storyline and a very sweet romance.

Another keeper.

Wasn't sure about this one but it was just as good as the others.

Not Nalini Singh’s best work

I only listened to the end to fill in the gaps of the wider story. I found the romance between Max and Sophia to be rushed and a bit too soppy. It isn’t very believable to me that a reasonable mature couple with decades of experience would fall ‘deeply in love’ after only a few days. Also, it annoys me that Singh created a strong female character only to declaw her and allow a man to fight her battles and protect her.
This book shouldn’t detract from the rest of the series which is very good.
The narrator left pauses too long between sentences which was very annoying and some of the characters sound the same which makes it difficult to follow as Singh jumps from character to character and it’s easy to miss who is being spoken about.
