Summary

The unabridged, downloadable audiobook edition of Blue Monday, the first in a fantastic new series from the masters of psychological thrillers, Nicci French. Read by the actress Beth Chalmers.

Monday, the lowest point of the week. A day of dark impulses. A day to snatch a child from the streets...

The abduction of five-year-old Matthew Farraday provokes national outcry and a desperate police hunt. And when his face is splashed over the newspapers, psychotherapist Frieda Klein is left troubled: one of her patients has been relating dreams in which he has a hunger for a child. A child he can describe in perfect detail, a child the spitting image of Matthew.

Detective Chief Inspector Karlsson doesn't take Frieda's concerns seriously until a link emerges with an unsolved abduction twenty years ago and he summons Frieda to interview the victim's sister, hoping she can stir hidden memories. Before long, Frieda is at the centre of the race to track the kidnapper. But her race isn't physical. She must chase down the darkest paths of a psychopath's mind to find the answers to Matthew Farraday's whereabouts. And sometimes the mind is the deadliest place to lose yourself.

Intriguing mystery with many twists

At first didn't like Beth C's reading but soon became attuned to it and enjoyed her characterisation.

Squeaky and speedy

I loved the story when reading it but found the narration to this version unlistenable and had to give up in frustration by chapter 4. The speed and pitch of the narration is so fast and high that even when listening on 0.7 speed it is still grating and difficult. It sounds like a fault in the recording to me: I haven’t listened to any other books read by the same narrator, but her acting of different character voices is sound so perhaps there is a more general technical glitch here.

Brilliant!

I’m so happy this is the start of 3 in a series. The story is strong, the characters well drawn and is brilliantly narrated.

I never leave reviews or comments!! This story is captivating. I only know of one other writer with this talent and that is Paul Greystoke. Blue Monday is amazing

Great Listen

I always find something to moan about, either a weak storyline, perhaps a bad narration, maybe too many Americanisms. Not this one! Great story, lots of twists and turns. well written and thoroughly enjoyable.

A brilliant start to the series

it's very different to any other mystery I've read, but still a great thrill. I have to admit I did guess the ending quite early. but I loved the characters, it was well paced and the performance lent itself well to the story. I'm interested to know what lies ahead, as I feel like there are things left unresolved unlike many of the detective series I read which seem to have a new mystery per book.

My favourite things about the book:
-The descriptions of London, especially from Frida's pov. I love the old rivers and hidden lives.
- The intertwined mysteries, you hardly know where it's all leading you until you do
- The psychology throughout is very interesting. I don't think I've ever read a mystery that is led by a therapist rather than a detective!

Superb

As is usual, I have listened to this series in an entirely random order. My bad! I've just got round to book 1, and, of course, loved it. Nicci French have created a fabulous hero in Frieda Klein, one that women of the 21st century can really get behind. She's clever, intelligent, educated, calm and dignified. She may be a little bit too independent, but that's not altogether a bad thing. Fortunately, in this book, Frieda meets a police officer who understands that quiet intelligence is a useful tool in solving mysteries. I love the juxtaposition of Frieda and her family, beautifully contrasting against each other. As I've now finished book 1 I'm going to buy the rest of the series, (I do have some of them) and make an effort to listen in order. Excellent narration by Beth Chalmers makes this one of my favourite series.

Gripping from start to finish

What did you like most about Blue Monday?

The first few chapters left me thinking where are they taking this story, but even the additional red herring characters were compelling and it made me want to keeping listening.
I was chilled by the first person reasonings of little Matthew and thought that like all the other characters this was well observed. The authors pulled all the pieces together in an ending that I didn't expect, which was great for me as I often guess the plot half way through the read.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Karlsson. (PC GRUMPY) the relationship between Klein and the detective. I hope he is in the next book

Which character – as performed by Beth Chalmers – was your favourite?

All of them I was lost in the performance of her male female and younger characters ...10/10
