Publisher's Summary

Shetland Detective Jimmy Perez knows it will be a difficult homecoming when he returns to the Fair Isles to introduce his fiancée, Fran, to his parents. Challenging to live on at the best of times, with the autumn storms raging, the island feels cut off from the rest of the world.

Trapped, tension is high and tempers become frayed when a woman's body is discovered at the renowned Fair Isles bird observatory, with feathers threaded through her hair. The islanders react with fear and anger.

With no support from the mainland and only Fran to help him, Jimmy has to investigate the old-fashioned way - and quickly. There's a killer on the island just waiting for the opportunity to strike again.

    "SLOW oh so very slow...."

this was a very SLOW story -- it seemed very dragged out - with the denouement repeated in case we hadn't got it. Did not enjoy the performer, accents slipping and not maintained. Dreadful midlands accent for one character. Not a book to listen to whilst driving as I dozed off a couple of times (safe in armchair).
Very little in way of any exciting action, felt I had done well to stick with it to the end.

"A rather boring delivery for an exciting story"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes, especially if you have enjoyed the BBC series because it is so TOTALLY different that you are getting another Jimmy Perez story, whoopee. But don't listen in the car, see comments on narrator.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Blue Lightning?

The story is exciting, no old bodies in this one [see White Nights and Red Bones] all fresh and recent! The ending is a bit of a shock and I found myself saying "Oh no, that can't happen".

How did the narrator detract from the book?

Gordon Griffin's delivery is sonorous, and his rather slow delivery and the curious way his voice seems to die away at the end of sentences made me want to shout "Get on with it, man!" There are also a couple of times that he has read a sentence putting the stress on the wrong part making a complete nonsense of the meaning. His accents are laughable especially the Shetland one. Everyone sounded as if they were 90 years old. Also get the readers to check how things are pronounced, a glaring one was Whooper swan, it's said Hooper not Wooper. This is the third Shetland book that I have listened to using him as a narrator. Luckily the new book -Dead Water- has a new narrator, Kenny Blyth, he's brilliant, lovely Scottish voice!

    "Excellent in all departments."

I had no idea who the killer was - very surprised at the ending. So sad and completely unexpected. Another star for Ann Cleeves. Love the Shetland atmosphere. I've been there so know what it's like. Great narration.

    "Back on track"

I was working my through the series, but almost gave up after Red Bones which I didn't enjoy so much. I only carried on as I had already bought this audiobook.

My interest has been recaptured and I am now well into Dead Water. I think I can guess what life has in store for Jimmy Pérez, but maybe I'm wrong again.

"Jimmy Perez at his ultimate best !!"
Would you listen to Blue Lightning again? Why?

This has a fantastic storyline, set on a remote island with no way of getting on or off the island, leaving everyone to query other people's motives for being there, and great twists in the storyline.

What other book might you compare Blue Lightning to, and why?

Similar to many other books set on a desolate island, without the usual countdown of murder victims makes this a refreshing change with a violent twist at the end. Too many books use the stranded on an island theme to name any particular one.

What about Gordon Griffin’s performance did you like?

Very good narration, with variations in pitch and speed where required.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

If I had the time, then yes

    Any additional comments?

Must buy more of Anne's Perez series, which are every bit as good as her Vera books.
