building the characters from the previous books, a good plot and an unpredictable end
a worthwhile read as part of the series but not one to take in isolation

Enzo is back with the french themed investigations, and now the victim is an obsessed chef, and the mysteries he left behind, the food descriptions are excellent the wine tasting is like all wine testing too much when you are not participating. The mystery is multi layered and well developed, with the help of humor and Enzo's family and his need for female company.
No it is not the Lewis trilogy expecting it to be is not fair to this collection that is more about france and its idiosyncrasies, and the well developed character of Enzo and the cast of characters that surround him through the series making it a very enjoyable ensemble.
The reader became Enzo a long time ago for me and I enjoy the voice very much, it has made the stories very good and clear with good characterizations.
After reading the Black House and the Lewis Man both of which I really enjoyed, I decided to try another Peter May book. Chalk and cheese spring to mind best summarised as; pretentious, boring, slow and all read with some very doggie accents - would not recommend.

I would listen to it again- maybe not right away but next year or so. Even though I would know the story, I loved the narrator and all the evocative writing about France and French food and wine.

I just discovered Peter May's Enzo McLeod series due to a 2 for 1 offer on Audible. I really enjoyed this book and the others in the series that Audible has , hopefully they will get the whole series. The setting is France which is a nice change and Simon Vance does a great job with all the accents including Enzo's Scottish accent. Great romp through the French countryside, although Enzo is a forensic scientist these books are really classic who dunnits as he sets out to solve the most famous unsolved murders in France this combined with his complicated love and family life makes for an entertaining read.
Love this series. Excellent writing, and perfect narration. I'm becoming quite attached to the character of Enzo Macloud.
