Summary

After 17-year-old Charlotte Kane, the beautiful, brilliant, and brooding daughter of a rich widower, disappears on a drunken New Years' Eve snowmobile ride, a raging blizzard soon snuffs out all search efforts. When her body is found during the spring thaw four months later, preliminary evidence implicates her ex-boyfriend: Ojibwe bad-boy Solemn Winter Moon. But then a second Charlotte Kane turns up dead, and Cork isn't sure of anything any more.

Balance of Novel Spoiled by Too Much Religion

Is there anything you would change about this book?

I would definitively lessen the amount of reference to religious issues.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

I write this as a non-believer and I am therefore conscious that many readers who know the authors work well, will buy his work specifically because it combines religion with crime and crime solving. This is the third novel I've read by William Kent Krueger and now I know that whilst they're well written, the formula is just not for me. My view is that there is just too much reliance on religion and it tips the balance of this crime novel in the wrong direction.

Less of that and more time spent on developing robust characters and plots and would do it for me.

Which scene did you most enjoy?

I generally enjoy the authors prowess in scene setting and excellent descriptive passages of the Minnesota climate and landscape.

Did Blood Hollow inspire you to do anything?

No.

Any additional comments?

I've previously bought 'Ordinary Grace' (which I really rate) and 'Iron Lake' which was pretty good but I don't think I'll bother with any more. Great pity, but no, the intensity of religious themes and mystic 'goings -on' are just not for me.

Good Mystery with surprise

I do cringe when I listen to the erroneous ideas of Scriptural precepts and the same old secular words that are meant to sound spiritual. But at least Christianity is not sneered at, as it so often is in today's world. American authors generally have that going for them, which is more of a relief to me.

Stepping away from series

End of the line for me reading about Cork and his adventures, book 1 was a wonderful read, book 2 was awful, a meandering mess. This entry is so unplausiable to render the novel laughable. With another 14 or so books to go I decided I can't continue, there's so much more out there to enjoy and new series to consume.
