Summary
The gritty new standalone crime novel from the No. 1 best-selling author of Shatter the Bones and Dark Blood
Detective Constable Ash Henderson has a dark secret…
Five years ago his daughter, Rebecca, went missing on the eve of her 13th birthday. A year later the first card arrived: homemade, with a Polaroid picture stuck to the front – Rebecca, strapped to a chair, gagged and terrified. Every year another card: each one worse than the last. The tabloids call him The Birthday Boy. He’s been snatching girls for 12 years, always in the run-up to their 13th birthday, sending the families his homemade cards showing their daughters being slowly tortured to death. But Ash hasn’t told anyone about Rebecca’s birthday cards – they all think she’s just run away from home – because if anyone finds out, he’ll be taken off the investigation. And he’s sacrificed too much to give up before his daughter’s killer gets what he deserves…

Magnificent Storytelling
A very flawed central character I wanted to like and sympathise with but couldn't. Not one of those stories with a contrived ending based upon a quick confession that explains the various plot threads. The story comes to a natural conclusion that leaves you wondering whether or not there is a new story to follow.

Gruesome but good!
What made the experience of listening to Birthdays for the Dead the most enjoyable?
I really enjoyed this book. I had read the Logan McRae series before and decided to try this for a change. Glad I did. I immediately liked the main character Ash Henderson. In fact all of the characters were believable and real . As with all Stuart MacBride's books , I have listed to before, the story is grisly and gritty. But there is humour too, woven naturally into the story to add to the realism . Over all a great story that leaves you wanting more. So I went straight off looking if there was anything else with these Characters .
Who was your favorite character and why?
Ash was my favourite character , tortured and brooding . A hard man with secretes.
Which scene did you most enjoy?
the final reveal , of course, was the best scene.
If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
Powerfully Gruesome

Superb narration and good story.
I have been very impressed with Stuart MacBride’s audiobooks. The characters are plausible, flawed and not predictable.
Ian Hanmore is one of the best narrators I have listened to.

perfect whodunnit, keeps you guessing all the way.
I loved everything about this book except the conclusion.
I won't spoil it, but I did not see that ending coming. 100% recommend this book to anyone who likes dark, mysterious books with humour and a great storyline on top.

Undecided!
I enjoyed this overall- it was incredibly violent, graphic and I feel stretched what was possible to do by a police officer without being arrested. I loved the character of Alice. Was really unsatisfied by the ending so overall a bit mixed but not sorry I listened stayed with it.

Interesting Story line but I found it a bit slow.
Great hideous premise for a story and fantastically rich characters. I did find a cop keeping "his" secret in this hard to accept.
The agony for the victims is unbearable and holds the tension brilliantly. This is then spoilt by the rather drawn out back story.
Accepting that it is a great story and I still love the gritty writing of Stuart MacBride.

Excellent
I like this series even better than Logan McCrae. Excellent narration as always by Ian Hanmore.

Great story
Brilliant example of its genre but really brutal in parts. If you can cope with that it will have you guessing until the end although I'd half solved it by the middle of the book but I'd no idea why!
