Most people ignored the outrageous reports on the news. But they became too frequent, they became too real. And soon, they began happening down the street. Then the Internet died. The television and radio went silent. The phones stopped ringing. And we couldn't look outside anymore.
Malorie raises the children the only way she can; indoors. The house is quiet. The doors are locked, the curtains are closed, mattresses are nailed over the windows. They are out there. She might let them in. The children sleep in the bedroom across the hall. Soon she will have to wake them. Soon she will have to blindfold them. Today they must leave the house. Today they will risk everything.

"A book that demands to be read in a single sitting, and through the cracks between one's fingers. There has never been a horror story quite like this. Josh Malerman truly delivers" (Hugh Howey bestselling author of
What a great horror/psychological suspense novel.
It is a chilling story! As the world as we know it falls prey to an apocalyptic plague of suicidal, murderous behaviour triggered by glimpsing an unknown creature, Malorie must do all she can to survive. DO NOT OPEN YOUR EYES!
I have half an hour left until the end of the book and I don't want it to end! It is so gripping and will have you on the edge of your seat with anxiety for the characters involved.
This was my first audio book which I have listened to and it was very good. Very easy to understand and clear what is happening. It gripped me from the start right to the end. There were parts which seemed to be a pointless to the overall story but generally very good. The narrator was generally ok, she sounded a bit robotic a times but clear enough to understand.
Didn't enjoy this at all. The narration was fine but the story was full of holes. The premise was promising enough - some sort of "phenomenon" that seems to devastate the whole world - but the author never really gets into what or why. I got the feeling that he just didn't have the answer so just avoided it. Plenty of speculation from the various characters, but I would have liked more depth on what actually happened and how the human race could prevail. I didn't feel any sense of dread and didn't care what happened to any of the characters. I mostly left waiting for ANYTHING to happen to move the story along. It wasn't horror, it wasn't scary, it wasn't creepy and the ending was just frustrating.
You don't 'see' anything except people going mad and killing themselves and each other. Blindness is terror, helplessness and protection all in one

One of the best! I found myself completely caught up in it. Excellently written, perfectly performed and a very good and quite terrifying story.
Touch of The Birds, touch of The Walking Dead - but this apocalyptic story wasn't really like either of them, it just made me think of them in certain ways.
Some reviewers have criticized Katherine Mangold's performance and this actually made me hesitate before buying it. But I'm SO glad i did buy it because it's a wonderful and powerful book and I found her reading of it to be exactly right. It suits the story, the situation and the characters. Her reading isn't flat and dull, it's measured and fitting for the woman who is the main character. She became Mallory in my mind. And where excitement and tension were required, she put it in her reading. Well done, Katherine!
It would have to be "Don't open your eyes".
Only - buy this!! It starts off slowly but soon it's totally gripping and involving. Terrifying in a subtle and insidious way, and quite different probably, than what you'd expect. And I actually had a tear in my eye at the perfect ending.
The narration of this book was terrible but the reader suited the character of Marerly. It seems being blind is cool which was nice as i'm blind myself so wanted to read this because of what the story was about. But no questions got answered don't know what the creatures where so that was disappointing as was the end of the book.
I am always being told to "get back into the real world"...why?-it is so much fun in other peoples!
Loved the fact that I had no idea what it was that made people go mad.It was.Certainly ,it kept you guessing-and hooked
The whole book was pretty memorable,as it was a totally new look at the apocalypse situation.
Where would you like me to start-Katharine Mangold is the worst narrator I have EVER heard.Flat,monotone,robotic...oh and lets not forget the screeching.Sometimes I thought she was yelling at me angry. and others she sounded bored-Thankfully it was a short book-if it was any longer I would not have been able to finish this.
The story yes-but probably better to read!..see above.
I loved the story of this book-if it had a better reader I would have listened in one sitting. But unfortunately, the chosen reader for this one was so bad all she did was give me a headache. If you really want to listen,I recommend using the speed button on your kindle,(not sure if other devices have one)...otherwise-buy the book-as the story is one of those not to be missed ....I implore you to read it...would not recommend the audio..listen to the whole of the sample-I made the mistake of only a few seconds.
Recommend Audible redo this one with a better reader-I will buy again if they do and relisten!
I enjoyed it. It's a horror story with no laughs.
Monotone, not great.
I think the reading of the book stopped any emotion for me. I only continued to listen because I wanted to know how it ended.
Don't. Open. Eyes.
The tension created. Cant really say much more without giving the central theme away but because of the plot device used the listener gets caught up in the characters tension.
This works so well as an audio book, especially at night. In the dark. The memsahib listened to the story after I had and although not a fan of this type of story she really enjoyed it.
