Publisher's Summary

Assistant DA Jenna James took an oath to uphold the law, administer justice, deter crime and ensure the safety of the community. Her job isn't easy, but it has always been black and white - criminals versus victims. Now she is the victim, and the very system she's fought to uphold is suddenly corrupt, the lines between good and bad are blurred and her world has turned upside down. She's always known that world existed - a world of power so immense that a single phone call can result in people disappearing or political offices being vacated, a world where doctors are available at a moment's notice. She's never been part of that world - never wanted to be. The body count is rising, and unless she finds proof beyond a reasonable doubt against a corrupt former federal judge, and a notorious criminal defense attorney, it will continue to rise.

The emphasis is on the thriller rather than the legal as very little action takes place in the courts. Plenty occurs outside of them, however, involving those who should be above, but not outside, the law - from judges to the defence and prosecuting attorneys.<br/>Jenna Patience James is a successful, fast rising prosecuting attorney and has for some time been dating Michael, the attractive and wealthy son of the powerful Judge William Elkins. When Michael's mother dies 'in an accident', Jenna discovers that not only is Michael not the man she had thought him to be but also that corruption, and worse, lie deep in the justice system. Lives are lost, murders committed and Jenna has to decide who to trust as she, herself, is horribly threatened.<br/><br/>This is a fast paced thriller with numerous twists and well developed characters as Jenna finds herself caught in a lethal battle between rich and powerful men who will stop at nothing to save their positions. Narrator Logan McAllister gives a superb reading, clear, well paced and giving distinctive voice to the numerous protagonists. <br/>Beyond Reasonable Doubt is the first book I have read by author, Linda Prather, but will certainly not be the last. I was very fortunate to have been gifted my copy by the rights holder, via Audiobook Boom. Thank you, I enjoyed it enormously, even if it did sometimes stretch credibility to it's limits, and can wholeheartedly recommend it to all who prefer their legal thrillers to take place outside of the courtroom.

    "Great Legal Thriller!"

Linda S. Prather is a new author to me, whereas I have listened to several books performed by Logan McAllister. Both are extremely talented. I loved all of the unexpected twists this book had. I typically listen to romances most of the time with mystery and thriller books added in for change of pace. This story gripped me from the very beginning. Logan added so much to the book with the various voices he performed and was able to add a sense of urgency. I was voluntarily provided with this review copy audiobook at no charge by the author, narrator, and or publisher. I highly recommend this book and will look for more books by both the author and narrator.

"It did not quite measure up to my expectations."

I like a good legal mystery/thriller, ideally with romantic interest. This book had the potential for both of these things. Unfortunately it did not quite measure up to my hopeful expectations.

The plot was very complex, but seemed a bit too contrived. Ties between the many characters were often not successfully made; plot connections and loose ends were not cleanly tied up. There were lots of nasty characters in the plot, and some characters seemed to be unsuccessfully straddling good and bad. Jenna’s character was reasonably well developed, but did not quite click! For such a “brilliant district attorney,” she made some rather naive decisions.

The romantic element was rather flat and unbelievable. The connections between either romantic couple were lacking. (Jenna/Harry, Jordan/his girl). It would have been nice to see some real heat and interaction between Jenna and Harry. They just seemed to lack warmth together.

When I think of legal thrillers, I hope for court room action. There was little to almost no court room action in this book. I think the book would have been improved by bringing out the plot elements in court room prosecution rather than by the killings by the “bad guys.” (I do not know the author’s background, so she may not have the necessary legal background.)

My husband and I both listened to the book and had similar reactions. The book held our interest to completion, but disappointed our expectations. I had no problems with the narrator.

II nearly missed picking up my free copy of this book, because the notice got lost in my emails. I am glad I found my email and was able to listen to the book. I am hoping that the author will gain in her skills as she continues to write.

I was given a free copy of this audible book, at my request, to provide an honest review.

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

I always prefer to read books with strong female characters. That's why I picked this book too. But I was sorta disappointed. Jenna didn't seem too bright, considering that she's Assistant DA n all. The other character constructions were poor as well. I didn't understand anyone's motive, tbf. And there were lot of unnecessary details that didn't contribute to the story at all. It sounded more like the author was trying to impress us with his knowledge of the subject matter. But instead, it distracted us from the story.

Beyond a Reasonable Doubt by Linda S. Prather was a good book. This was a great legal thriller that centered around Assistant DA Jenna James. Jenna finds herself a victim and many things around her start unraveling. This was a great Read and I can't wait to read more by Linda S. Prather.

<br/>This book centers around Jenna, the female character who's main objective is to follow the rules.<br/><br/>The story line has a quick pace, a few hours in court, murder, and corruption, which lead to a decent mystery thriller novel.<br/><br/>Logan McAllister did well with the narration.<br/><br/>Note:<br/>"This audio book was provided by the author, narrator, or publisher at no cost in exchange for an unbiased review."<br/>

    "Legal Corruption"

Jenna is a smart successful Assistant District Attorney who gets caught up in her boyfriend’s corrupt family. The head of the family, Judge William Elkins is rich and powerful and will do anything to keep his long line of unethical cover-ups secret.. Jenna fights hard with a couple of police friends to bring justice to the judge and his co-horts.. The story is a face paced thriller which was hard to put down.

"Good story, somewhat far-fetched in places"
Would you listen to Beyond a Reasonable Doubt again? Why?

Probably not, although I might listen to the next in the series. I don't usually revisit audiobooks because I am wanting to hear new books.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Harry Redmond because he was one of the most believable characters in the book. Still flawed, but believably so.

What three words best describe Logan McAllister’s performance?

    Mechanical, stereotypical and okay.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Lots of bodies and bombs everywhere.

    Any additional comments?

I really thought Jenna was going to be a great character. She is merely good character. At times she is really savvy and I could get behind her 100%. Then there were times she was really not very smart and that didn't work very well. Granted, a perfect heroine or hero is unbelievable, but any flaws built into the character should be in line with the character. For instance, she is a brilliant Assistant District Attorney who is prosecuting high profile crimes, yet she is naive enough to open her door without seeing who is there when she knows there are people out to harm her. Doesn't really mesh. Some of the other ups and downs in her character just seemed too out of balance. Yet, she is a likable character.<br/><br/>Additionally, the book sometimes took unexpected turns that were somewhat disjointed. At times I thought I had an abridged edition. There were also a lot of happenings in the book that caused the book to lack believability. All of the bodies piling up and an unrelenting two decades of a reign of terror by a corrupt federal judge. <br/><br/>Further, there were a lot of loose ends that weren't quite satisfactorily tied up. I won't mention these in detail because I don't want this review to be a spoiler. <br/><br/>Yet, with all of these issues, I did like the book and will likely get the next in the series. This book was given to me for free at my request and I provided this voluntary review.

    "Very well written"
Would you listen to Beyond a Reasonable Doubt again? Why?

Yes, when you know the end from the beginning you can put the pieces together better.

What other book might you compare Beyond a Reasonable Doubt to and why?

David Baldacci's legal thrillers have the same suspense about corrupt justice.

What does Logan McAllister bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Loved his voice, cadence and knowledge of characters that brings them to life.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

The rape scene of Jenna was painful to listen to.

This roller coaster of a listen was fun, and thrilling, and scary, and the minute it ended, I wanted back on.<br/><br/>The narration was perfect. Jenna was equal parts take-no-prisoners and soft and she knew when to let someone take care of her and when to take charge. You go girl.<br/><br/>The bad guys here were REALLY unlikable. I'm not sure if I fully agree with their motivations but that matters none, they got theirs in the end.<br/><br/>Did I mention how much I loved this listen?<br/><br/>This book ended with a resolution and a cliffhanger and I can't wait to take another ride.
