Publisher's Summary

Penguin presents the unabridged, downloadable audiobook edition of Assassin's Creed: Renaissance, a new novelisation based on one of the biggest gaming-media franchises in the world.

Read by the actor Gunnar Cauthery.

'I will seek Vengeance upon those who betrayed my family. I am Ezio Auditore di Firenze. I am an Assassin...'

The Year of Our Lord 1476 - the Renaissance: culture and art flourish alongside the bloodiest corruption and violence. Bitter blood-feuds rage between the warring political families of Italy.

Following the murder of his father and brothers, Ezio Auditore di Firenze is entrusted with an ancient Codex, the key to a conspiracy that goes back to the centuries-old conflict between the shadowy Templar Knights and the elite Order of Assassins.

Ezio must avenge the deaths of his kinsmen and in doing so fulfil his destiny, and live by the laws of the Assassin's Creed.

Truth is written in blood.

Assassin's Creed: Renaissance is based on the phenomenally successful gaming series. Fans of the game will love these stories. Other titles in the series include Assassin's Creed: Forsaken, Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, Assassin's Creed: The Secret Crusade, and Assassin's Creed: Revelations.

Oliver Bowden is the pen-name of an acclaimed novelist.

    "Great fun!"
What made the experience of listening to Assassin's Creed the most enjoyable?

The storyline wasnt too serious, having never played the games it was fun to listen to and mildly amusing.

What did you like best about this story?

What could be told in 12hrs was told in 12hrs not 21hrs, the book was explanatory but to the point, no lengthy explainations which werent required.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I did listen to this in one sitting, (a very long car journey)

    Any additional comments?

A nice easy listen (with the exception of the volume level changing) narrator was clear and well pronounced with good vocal range.

"Michael Kramer would have done this series justice."

I love assassins creed and this book is a good companion to the games. It gives a more detailed account of some of the scenes and characters from the game with a lot of the dialogue being pulled straight from there. The only thing I dislike is the narration..Why the narrator thought Scottish would be an appropriate choice of accent for some of the regions in Italy is beyond me (?) at first it was comical, but after a while the narrators chosen accents start to grate on me. I will be buying the books instead of the audiobooks after listening to this because, in my opinion, the narration removes some of the culture from the story. WE'RE IN ITALY NOT SCOTLAND. I think Michael Kramer would have done this series justice. This guy...not so much...

"A by numbers translation of the game"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes and have done, the AC books are functional books, they are certainly not the deepest as they almost literally follow the game's narrative, however they are easy to listen to and make journeys or quiet time fly by due to their uncomlicated nature. Gunnar is a superb narrator.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Assassin's Creed?

Ezio's journey from boy to man

What about Gunnar Cauthery’s performance did you like?

Very good, some odd accent choices but each voice is clear and easy to distinguish and lots of inflection on the narration keeps everything moving nicely

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

In Florence no-one can hear you scream Assassin

    "Amazing Story"

I am a massive fan of the Assassins Creed games so I expected nothing less than perfection, the narrator brought the entire story to life and the story as a whole was fantastic, I would highly recommend.

    "Unable to sustain interest"

I had a hard time building any interest in this novel. At the beginning it felt as if I was hearing a rather dated version of a Shakespeare drama with very obvious plotting and dialog. Towards the middle of the story it became more interesting but I was not able to build much empathy with the main character and too much seemed to happen by good fortune than by any planning or design. I really struggled to maintain interest to the end.

The narration was good and the basic story was well crafted with no major problems it just was not for me as it felt uninspired and really didn't deliver much in the way of drama or excitement.

Would you try another book from Oliver Bowden and Anton Gill and/or Gunnar Cauthery?

Yes, another book, to see if this was a one off poor writting performance and a later novel might be better.
I will look for another narrator though.

Would you be willing to try another one of Gunnar Cauthery’s performances?

    Possibly.
I do not like to single out one individual for a poor performance, especially considering the novel he had to deal with was poor to begin with. But the main concern was the different voices used, while i commend him on managing so many different characters, these sounded like the most Scottish Venetian's I have ever heard.
The various accents realy did not suit the setting.

    Any additional comments?

Id use a spare credit for another of these novels and not pay in the future and I urge you to do the same. Story is not well written, very repeditive and lots of italian thrown in for no good reason. Narrator also uses accents that do not compliment the books setting and period, which adds to preventing the reader from being immersed in the story.

What did you like best about Assassin's Creed? What did you like least?

It was set in my favorite time period.

I was constantly turning the volume way up and way down. That was very aggravating.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

    If things were more realistic

Do you think Assassin's Creed needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

    No

    Any additional comments?

The volume/ narration was very aggravating
