Summary

10 invited guests on an island…

Ten strangers, apparently with little in common, are lured to an island mansion off the coast of Devon by the mysterious U.N.Owen. Over dinner, a record begins to play, and the voice of an unseen host accuses each person of hiding a guilty secret. That evening, former reckless driver Tony Marston is found murdered by a deadly dose of cyanide.

The tension escalates as the survivors realise the killer is not only among them but is preparing to strike again… and again…

Still a superb read!

I don't normally go for older books myself as I often find the writing style and language used a put off, but this book has a timeless quality to it and was an easy read. Was sucked right in to the plot and loved going back to previous chapters to look for subtle clues. I was convinced I had deduced the murderer at least 3 times before the truth was revealed. The ending wasn't 100% convincing as an explanation if I am honest but a minor point. Narrator was superb and brought the many characters to life excellently.

A Masterpiece

Any additional comments?

The perfect - and possibly ultimate - whodunnit!
I have seen a couple of film versions of this over the years, so unfortunately did know what happens at the end but still loved very minute. If you do not know the twist, I envy you! You are in for such a treat!

Excellent mystery, I couldn't work it out

Good voice acting, distinctive voices for the ten characters that weren't overdone. The story is excellent, I kept a tally of whom I thought the murderer might be but it didn't avail me in the end.

Superb

I've read a lot of AC, but mostly Marple and Poirot, very few stand alone. I bought this because of the amazing BBC adaptation last year (well worth a watch by the way). The audiobook didn't disappoint. Absolutely gripping and read brilliantly. Sometimes I forget how masterful AC was!

Satisfying

Dan Stevens is a classy narrator and I've really enjoyed all his audiobooks - here I wasn't so keen on the voice he used for Justice Wargrave, but that aside, he brought it all to vivid life and left room for the listener to fill in any ambiguities. A perfectly well paced thriller, particularly once the soldiers begin to fall, ever more rapidly - builds a sense of isolation, paranoia and fatalism which kept us nicely gripped throughout both a plane journey and two train journeys. Christie does it again - without that little man's grey cells this time! (Oh, but the neat conclusion was just a little too neat, perhaps - we couldn't quite picture the final scenario working so well as it did...!)
